Despite the tablet’s display and battery life failing to reach my high expectations, I enjoyed using it during my week-long test. Sure, the 7in screen’s resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels is barely more than an iPhone 4’s 960 x 640, but the Iconia Tab A100’s physical size makes just about everything easier to do, especially typing, without the dinner-plate juggling demanded by 10in tablets.

Where the Acer lets itself down is the viewing angles of the screen. Place it on a table, spin it round and you'll notice it has one good side, one unviewable side and two portrait views that will just about do. Not ideal, and depending on how you use it this can be incredibly annoying. Hand-held it's fine, but problems can arise if you prop it up beside you. So hardware connections and viewing angles aside, this is a great tablet, and for this sort of money it's just about unbeatable.

But we do prefer it over the HTC Flyer, due to the included Android 3.2 operating system. One thing falls flat here: The Iconia A100 doesn't have a traditional USB mass storage mode, and it's totally incompatible with Macs. To plug it into a Windows PC, you have to download Acer's clunky Acer Sync software, after which the Tab appears as a drive you can drag and drop to. Acer Sync also purports to sync your Outlook data with your tablet, but I couldn't get that part of the software to find my tablet.

For now though, if you are going after the best possible tablet experience I would likely spend the extra $100 and get an iPad 2. In conclusion all I’ll say is that the Acer Iconia Tab is nothing remarkable in the state it’s in right now. Hardware wise it’s pretty solid, especially with the inclusion of the full-sized USB port, but it cannot reach its full potential until Google improves functionality with the next Honeycomb update. The Iconia tab is just good enough, not great. The only other thing working in its favor right now is its low price tag. Certainly, anybody who’s looking to get a new tablet should probably have a look at the Acer Iconia Tab, but right now the tablets market is still in it’s infancy to provide an experience rich enough to replace netbooks.

Windows 7 does do touch pretty well, but it's always going to be an afterthought for all but a few apps. There's a lot you can do well with touch on Windows, from browsing to playing all of your media (especially in Windows Media Center which works as well for fingers as it does for a remote control). It's the other apps that you want Windows for in the first place that don't always work well enough with touch. You have the keyboard as a fallback, but that's not quite ergonomic enough to really make this the perfect combo. But if you have a tablet PC with a swivelling keyboard that you long to be able to rip off (and you already know what compromises you'll be making), you'll love the Tab.

This is long compared to 15in laptops, but most netbooks and some ultra-portable laptops can last as long as ten hours. When playing H.264 video, the battery ran for just under five hours. This might seem impressive at first glance, but it pales in comparison to the iPad 2 which lasted 17 hours in the same test. The bottom line is that you'd need to keep the charger close by when using the W500 just so it doesn't ran out of battery power when you need it most.

This is a tricky conclusion to write, because as always there’s a lot of concluding that has to be done. On the one hand, we have Intel’s Clover Trail platform. On the other we have Acer’s Iconia W510 tablet itself. And on a magical third hand we have to conclude on behalf of Microsoft’s Windows 8. Clover Trail is good. I only have NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 to compare it to at this point, and there Intel wins hands down.

Ein vollwertiges Windows 8 auf einem Tablet, das nicht größer als ein Taschenbuch ist - das hat was. Vor allem Pendler, Schüler und Studenten wird die Möglichkeit freuen, das schwere Notebook vielleicht künftig am Schreibtisch lassen zu können. Der erste Eindruck des Iconia W3 ist vielversprechend. Mit Sicherheit werden vergleichbare Windows 8-Tablets anderer Hersteller schon bald folgen.

It seems it might well have achieved exactly that. The Iconia W3 comes pre-installed with Microsoft Office Home & Student, boasts 2GB of RAM on the Intel Clovertrail architecture and offers either 32 or 64GB of storage.

It may look like one, but the Acer A1 is no iPad Mini. For a lot of folk, though, that in itself is a benefit. Android buffs seeking an eight-inch tablet have few other choices than the A1, and the iPad Mini is obviously not among them. And, it has to be said, the Acer offers much better expansion and connectivity than the Apple product. It’s clearly less expensive to manufacture than the Mini, but then it costs a whole lot less too.

Acer: 1976 gegründet, ist Acer einer der internationalen Hersteller mit den meisten Marktanteilen weltweit und den meisten getesteten Notebook-Modellen im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum. Nach eigenen Angaben ist das Unternehmen "drittgrößter Anbieter auf dem PC-Weltmarkt und auf Position zwei im Notebook-Segment mit dem schnellsten Wachstum unter den Top fünf der Weltrangliste". Der Konzern ist zusammengeschlossen mit Gateway Inc. und Packard Bell. Acer beschäftigt weltweit 5.000 Mitarbeiter. Im Jahr 2007 realisierter Umsatz: 14,07 Mrd. US$. Acer ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 9,9 % Marktanteil der weltweit drittgrößte Hersteller von Personal Computern (HP 18,9 %, Dell 16,4 %, Lenovo 7,5 %, Apple 5,7%).
3D Spiele sind auf diesen Vertretern nur in Ausnahmen spielbar, grundsätzlich sind die Grafikkarten hierfür jedoch nicht geeignet. Office Programme und Internet surfen dürfte jedoch ohne Problem laufen.

Diese Karten können nur sehr alte und sehr anspruchslose 3D Spiele flüssig darstellen. Anwendungen wie Office, Internet surfen, Bildbearbeitung oder (SD) Videoschnitt sind jedoch ohne große Einschränkungen möglich.
AMD Radeon HD 6250: Integrierte Grafikkarte in den Ontario Netbook Prozessoren (z.B. C-50 und C-30) mit UVD3 Video Prozessor und keinem eigenen Speicher.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Intel HD Graphics oder GMA HD genannte onboard Grafikkarte welche im Package der Core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale Dual-Core Prozessoren untergebracht wird. Je nach Prozessormodell maximal mit 500 bis 766 MHz getaktet (Turbo Boost). Von Lenovo anscheinend auch GMA5700MHD genannt. Die gleichgenannte Intel HD Graphics Prozessorgrafik in den Sandy Bridge Prozessoren basiert auf einer neueren Architektur.
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: In Ivy Bridge Prozessoren (3. Generation Core) integrierte Grafikkarte in höchster Ausbaustufe. Je nach Prozessor (ULV bis Desktop Quad-Core) unterschiedlich getaktet.
Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: In Sandy Bridge Prozessoren (Core ix-2xxx) integrierte Grafikkarte von Intel. Stärkere GT2 genannte Version mit 12 Execution Units (EUs). Je nach Modell mit unterschiedlichen Taktraten (350-650MHz) und TurboBoost Unterstützung (900-1350MHz).

C-50: Intel Atom Konkurrent mit relativ schneller integrierter Grafikkarte. Der Doppelkernprozessor ist auf Grund seiner geringen Taktung wohl nur auf dem Niveau von Einzelkern Atoms mit 1.6GHz.
Intel Core i5:
3317U:
Stromspar-Doppelkernprozessor mit nur 1.7 GHz Basisfrequenz aber einem Turbo bis zu 2.6 GHz (bei ausreichender Kühlung). Integriert die Intel HD Graphics 4000 (jedoch nur mit 350 - 1050 MHz Taktung) und einen DDR3-1600 Speicherkontroller.
Intel Atom: Die Intel Atom Serie besteht aus 64-Bit Mikroprozessoren für günstige und stromsparende Notebooks, MIDs oder UMPC. Besonderheit der Architektur, ist das die Befehle nicht wie derzeit üblich (z. B. Intel Core Architekture oder AMD Turion) "out of Order" sondern "in Order" ausgeführt werden. Dadurch verliert man zwar einiges an Performance, jedoch spart dies Transistoren und daher Kosten und dadurch auch etwas Strom.
Z2760: SoC mit integriertem Dual Core Atom Prozessor (max 1.8 GHz), 533 MHz PowerVR SGX 545 Grafikkarte und Dual Channel LPDDR2-800 Speicherkontroller.
Intel Core i3:
2365M: Stromspar-Doppelkernprozessor mit nur 1.4 GHz Basisfrequenz und ohne Turbo Boost. Integriert die Intel HD Graphics 3000 (jedoch nur mit 350 - 1000 MHz Taktung) und einen DDR3-1333 Speicherkontroller. Bis auf den Small Business Advantage (SBA) Support (nötig für das Ultrabook Logo) identisch mit dem Core i3-2367M.
7.0: Das ist eines der kleinsten Formate, das für Netbooks, Subnotebooks oder UMPC verwendet wurde. Es gibt nur fast keine Modelle mit diesem Format. Langes Arbeiten ist hier unpraktisch, dieser winzige Display ist für zwischendurch unterwegs gedacht. Der Vorteil von Netbooks/Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Gerät klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.

70.26%: Diese Bewertung ist schlecht. Die meisten Notebooks werden besser beurteilt. Als Kaufempfehlung darf man das nicht sehen. Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
