The Asus Zephyrus S (GX701) is a machine that packs uncompromising hardware, maxed out in terms of the GPU and RAM. If the 1TB NVMe isn't enough for you, there's a spare NVMe slot on the board in case you want to throw another stick in there. The display offers a pristine gaming experience with its G-Sync support and the keyboard is a treat to game on. The new volume knob may not seem like much, but it is positioned perfectly for fine-tuning your audio while in the middle of a game without having to fumble with key combinations. The price for the machine is pretty steep, given that the Zephyrus cannot be considered a desktop replacement. It is, however, for the gamer and creator who are always on the move.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is by far, the best gaming laptop that I’ve ever reviewed. It has a great design, solid build quality, and 144Hz display. It also provides excellent performance especially with games while its thermals are very good to the point that it can handle massive process without having to throttle. The keyboard is somewhat awkward at first given the key’s spacing from each other while the trackpad placement is also small. However, you’ll get used to this quickly thanks to its great tactility.

Also, since you can only use the full potential of the Nvidia RTX 2080 in just a single game, for now, it is advisable to go for the ROG laptops with Nvidia GTX cards at much cheaper prices that can play the current crop of games with similar performance.

All in all though this is a great piece of tech. It’s expensive, yes, but so are the other thin-and-light 17-inchers with similar specs, so the form-factor remains the GX701’s important antagonizing factor, making this impractical while not on a spacious desk, but as the same time more comfortable than other devices while on a desk and hooked up to an external mouse.

All in all, I expect the 2019 Zephyrus GX701 to turn some heads and attract quite a few potential buyers if the final products actually deliver at the performance, thermals and noise levels. This is not going to be a cheap-laptop by any means, but ultraportable gaming laptops have never been cheap, and those with a 17-inch screen squeezed inside a compact shell are even harder to come by and there’s no wonder will demand a premium. In fact, there’s only the MSI GS75 Stealth Thin you could consider instead, for the time being. The 15-inch GX531 on the other hand pales in the more competitive niche of 15-inch ultraportables, and its multiple quirks and lacks compared to the 17-inch variant sure don’t help its cause.
