Fazit: I have to admit though, I want the R400 to succeed. It does a lot of great things, but in our view it's version 1 hardware that needs to be improved to find a viable market share. Toshiba put two years of engineering into this product and the work shows. There are a lot of impressive features, but the $2600 price tag and a few questionable design decisions make the R400 a tough purchase.

Fazit: The good: Excellent design; secondary OLED display provides useful info when the lid is closed, easy to use EV-DO. The bad: Disappointing performance and battery life; ridiculously expensive. The bottom line: If money is no object for you, the Toshiba Portege R400 is an eye-catching, Windows Vista conversation piece, but the rest of us will want more performance from a system this expensive.

Fazit: Bottom Line: The Toshiba Portégé R400-S4931 is one of the lightest, sexiest convertible tablets I've seen, showcasing many of the neat features found in Windows Vista Ultimate. Pros: Sexy design. Light and forearm-friendly. Vista Ultimate edition. Gorgeous widescreen for media mavens. SideShow LCD display. Integrated EV-DO antenna. Cons: Low-powered. Too many proprietary applications loaded.

Fazit: Toshiba shakes things up with a striking convertible that sports a bright LED display, fast mobile broadband, and a convenient external screen for at-a-glance alerts. We like, not love, the Toshiba Portégé R400-S4931. The design is a bit polarizing, and we think an optical drive should have been integrated. But we appreciate the system's light weight, and on-the-go users will really appreciate the external display for alerts and the fast EV-DO Rev. A connectivity.

Toshiba's Portégé R400 Has Exciting Features

Fazit: Toshiba's Portégé R400-S4931 Tablet PC is quite impressive in many ways. It looks great and has a range of new and special features that make it an impressive little notebook computer. Though some of its components are less than stellar performers, Vista Ultimate, unbridled by memory resident programs, runs quite fast in both standard and Tablet PC mode. I'll reserve judgment on performance until I've got some memory resident apps to test out and until Vista-ready notebook performance tests are available, but for now I'm high on Vista on notebooks like Toshiba's R400, if you plan to keep your notebook fairly vanilla.

Toshiba Portege R400 Tablet PC Review

Fazit: The R400 is an innovative Tablet, but it comes with a hefty price tag. It has a solid design that works great in Tablet and notebook mode. There is no flimsy feeling to it and the LED backlit screen is great for watching movies or checking out your favorite photos. The screen is glossy and gives off reflections under bright light conditions, so be aware outdoor use won't work. Overall Toshiba could have gone with a more powerful processor because the system runs a little slow, especially since it has Windows Vista Ultimate. I would have liked it to have a little more performance endurance and less eye candy appeal if you could trade such things off. The R400 does sport the SideShow display, which is a unique feature for the business professional on-the-go, but at the end of the day the high price tag and lack of performance to match that price stand in the way of it being a top-competitor for your average consumer.

Fazit: Innovative Eleganz. Design und Funktionalität des Portégé R400 sind führend. Dieser sehr leichte 12'' Tablet PC wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Intel entwickelt. Es ist das erste Notebook mit automatischer E-Mail-Synchronization über 3G Netzwerke und Echtzeitanzeige auf einem speziellen Display auf der Gehäusevorderseite. Beschwerden über eine niedrige Leistung des Portégé R400 sind nicht gerechtfertigt, da sein Haupteinsatzgebiet einfache Office Anwendungen, e-mail und Überwachen von Aktienpreisen sind. Als Tablet PC ist er kein Tool für Grafiker, sondern eher für Manager. Der Stylus kann zum Notizen schreiben, E-mail beantworten und zum Bearbeiten von Dokumenten verwendet werden und ist für nicht Tippgeübte angenehmer als die Verwendung einer Tastatur. Wir können bestätigen, dass eine Rückkehr zur Tastatur nachdem man eine zeitlang mit Tablet und Stift gearbeitet hat, mühsam ist.

Fazit: The Toshiba Portege R400 12.1” tablet is not only good looking, but it’s surprisingly functional. As a lightweight tablet PC, it pushes design and mobility limits, but it’s also not for the faint of pocketbook – the R400 starts at around $2500. Even though it’s got the looks, it can leave some things to be desired for the ultramobile crowd in terms of power and functionality. There are a couple of distinct features of this laptop. First, it uses Microsoft’s Active Notifications technology to let you monitor your email and calendar when the laptop is closed and inactive (but turned on). This was one of the first laptops to use this technology. What this means is that you can watch for new emails and your next appointments without opening up your laptop thanks to a small external screen on the front of the laptop.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 ist ein onboard integrierter Grafikchip und kann als schneller getakteter GMA 900 bezeichnet werden (auf Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipsatz, erst ab Core Duo/Solo verfügbar). 2006 ist es die meistgenutzte Grafiklösung und gehört zum leistungsschwächsten Drittel mobiler Grafiklösungen, kann daher nur für ältere Spiele sinvoll eingesetzt werden. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es aber ohne Probleme.

Intel Core Duo: Intel Core Duo (Pentium M-Nachfolger), ein Doppelkernprozessor mit sehr gutem Verhältnis von Leistung zu Stromverbrauch. Die 2 MB L2 Cache werden gemeinsam genutzt. Die maximale Leistungsaufnahme von 31 Watt ist nur 4 W mehr als beim Pentium M. Aufgrund geringen Stromverbrauchs eignet sich Core Duo auch für Subnotebooks. Ausserdem unterstützt er nun auch SSE3 Befehle. Bei Anwendungen, die für Multiprozessoren designed wurden, kann die Leistung fast verdoppelt ausfallen verglichen mit Pentium M.

12.1": Es handelt sich um das häufigste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Es stellt die durchschnittliche Grösse für Subnotebooks dar.
Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das winzige Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten sehr anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind fast nicht nutzbar.

1.6 kg: Diese Subnotebook ist deutlich leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks, und stellen eine mittlere Gewichtsklasse unter den Subnotebooks dar. 11 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
Toshiba: Toshiba ist einer der grössten internationalen Notebook-Hersteller. Für Toshiba-Modelle gibt es viele Testberichte. Die Gesamtbewertungen deutschsprachiger Magazine fallen sehr positiv aus, das Preis/Leistungs-Verhältnis wird eher durchschnittlich beurteilt. Bei den Teilbewertungen Ausstattung und Display schneidet Toshiba ebenfalls gut ab.
