For years now, I've recommended Amazon's Fire line as my favorite affordable tablets. The current Fire HD 8 continues that legacy. Don't buy the 7-inch Fire, which has inadequate RAM; if you're getting a small Amazon tablet, get this one. (There's also the aforementioned Fire HD 8 Plus that adds more RAM and wireless charging, which we'll review soon.) But I feel like the value equation has wobbled as Amazon's Appstore continues to lack important apps, and Amazon has made it harder to load apps from other sources. That means you're going to have to make the call based on what you want to use your cheap tablet for, and it isn't as clear as it used to be. If you're satisfied by Amazon's content library, plus the streaming services supported here, go for the Fire HD 8. Otherwise you'll sacrifice some battery life, but gain considerable flexibility with Walmart's $64 Onn. 8-inch tablet, which has the standard Google Play store.

If you are happy to persevere with Amazon’s heavy sales tactics then the Amazon Fire HD 8 is about the first Amazon-branded tablet that I have used that I feel like I can actually recommend. Are there better Android tablets out there? 100%. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the Fire HD 8 so much that I have used it a fair amount more than I actually expected.

There are now two 8-inch models to choose from: a baseline Fire HD 8 starting at $90 (£90), and the $110 (£110) Fire HD 8 Plus, which adds wireless charging and slightly better performance. The tablet isn't currently available in Australia but the starting price converts to about AU$160.

For casual TV watching and music listening, the Fire HD 8's screen and speakers prove it to be a solid device for all the basics, and its USB-C port means you can charge it with the same cable your new laptop uses. Though, considering the HD 8’s epic battery life, you won’t need to refuel it often. The Fire HD 8 wouldn't feel so compromised, though, if it could just get Google apps, so you could use Chrome and not rely on Amazon's Silk web browser.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 isn’t a quality tablet by any means, but at $89.99 it’s an amazing deal for those who are invested in the Amazon ecosystem. If you love shopping, watching video, reading, listening to music, and flipping through magazines using Amazon’s services, the Fire HD 8 will do all those things acceptably well. Granted, any other tablet will work just as well, but most will cost more and their UIs are not made to make the Amazon experience as seamless. My perception of the Fire HD 8 hasn’t changed much, even with the update. There’s a reason why this slate is so cheap. Amazon, like a twisted, genius mastermind, has somehow managed to convince countless consumers to spend money on an advertisement-heavy trap — er, I mean “tablet” — to get ‘em hooked on Amazon Prime.

Es ist definitiv Zeit für ein Upgrade des Amazon Fire HD 8, da der Hersteller Tablets ungefähr alle zwei Jahre aktualisiert. Im Jahr 2020 ist das mittlere Tablet dran, das zuletzt 2018 ein Upgrade bekommen hat. Es wurde mit dem Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus, das kabelloses Laden und mehr Arbeitsspeicher bietet, und einer Kinder-Version, die eine Schutzhülle hat, vorgestellt. Doch das Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020) ist keine große Überarbeitung des Fire HD 8 (2018), eher ein neues Tablet mit einigen Optimierungen.

Designmäßig bringt dieses Modell definitiv nichts Neues, außer einen rechteckigen Form mit einem Bildschirm. Allerdings ist die Vorderkamera im Vergleich zu den meisten Tablets recht einzigartig platziert. Wenn man das Gerät in Hochformat-Position hält, befindet sie sich in der Mitte der linken Kante. Für Videoanrufe ist das eine ausgezeichnete Position, da man in das Display und zugleich scheinbar in die Kamera schauen kann. 

Der Bildschirm des Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020) hat eine Diagonale von 8 Zoll, was schon der Name verrät. Das LCD-Panel hat eine Auflösung von 800 x 1280 Pixel, was einige Nachteile mit sich führt, besonders Spiele sehen verpixelt aus, Filme und TV-Serien auch nicht wesentlich besser. Ein Vorteil von LCD ist allerdings die gute Sichtbarkeit bei direktem Sonnenlicht; man kann es also gut im Freien benutzen.

Beim Prozessor handelt es sich um einen MediaTek MT8168 Chipsatz, der für günstige Tablets und E-Reader entworfen wurde – dieses Tablet ist also kein Kraftpaket. Bei der Navigation und beim Öffnen von Apps gibt es ein wenig Verzögerung, in Hinsicht auf den Prozessor ist das aber verständlich. Was den Akku angeht, so bleiben die Kapazitäten bei Amazon-Tablets ein Geheimnis, doch das neue Modell soll eine Laufzeit von zwölf Stunden haben, also mehr als die zehn Stunden beim 2018-Modell. Diese Einschätzung der Akku-Laufzeit mag zwar stimmen, wenn man sich Videos anschaut oder Musik hört, doch bei längeren Spielsitzungen muss man mit kürzeren Zeiten rechnen. Obwohl dieses Modell kein großes Upgrade des Vorgängers ist, könnte es trotzdem überzeugte Nutzer von Amazons Unterhaltungs-Angeboten anziehen, da es als tragbares Medien-System sehr gut funktioniert. Dennoch bleibt die Wahl eines Tablets subjektiv, es kommt auf die Bedürfnisse und Vorlieben des Benutzers an.
