Man könnte behaupten, die Zenfone-Reihe von Asus sei einer der Pioniere in der Kategorie Günstige Smartphones gewesen. Besonders das Zenfone 2 entfachte den Trend “Billig und gut” unter Smartphones. Doch aufgrund heftiger Konkurrenz von verschiedenen chinesischen Firmen schrumpft Asus’ Marktanteil seit dem Zenfone 3. Das Zenfone 5 soll das Unternehmen wieder in die Top-Liga bringen. Wie schon bei früheren Generationen hat Asus den gleichen Namen für alle 2018-Modelle gewählt. Man findet sie unter dem Namen Zenfone 5, doch sie variieren hinsichtlich der Spezifikationen und Käuferzielgruppe. Das Zenfone 5Z sitzt an der Spitze der Modelle von 2018. Fast die gesamte Vorderseite ist mit einem 6,2-Zoll-IPS-LCD-Display bedeckt, das eine Auflösung von 1080 x 2246 Pixel aufweist. Die Helligkeit des Bildschirmes erreicht einen ziemlich hohen Wert, insgesamt handelt es sich um ein sehr gutes Display, obwohl es nicht AMOLED ist. Es hat außerdem das neueste Bildseitenverhältnis, 19:9, sowie eine Aussparung am oberen Bildschirmrand, die einen kleinen Teil des Bildschirmes bedeckt. Wie schon beim iPhone X, dem Huawei P20 Pro und vielen weiteren neuen Geräten, muss man sich an das Design gewöhnen. Allerdings ist es notwendig, das Display auf einem kleineren Gerät zu maximieren. Das Gehäuse des Zenfone 5Z besteht aus Aluminium und Glas, was in einem eleganten und ordentlichen Aussehen resultiert. Die Rückseite glänzt wie Metall. Das Smartphone wiegt 155 g und ist 7,9 mm dünn.

Das Zenfone 5 ist mit Qualcomms neuestem Prozessor, dem Snapdragon 845, ausgestattet, der auch in den meisten aktuellen Flaggschiffen vorzufinden ist, wie etwa dem OnePlus 6 und dem Samsung Galaxy S9. Der Prozessor ist mit einer Adreno 630 GPU gepaart, die für ernstes Gamen bereit ist. Es gibt mehrere Speicherkonfigurationen, zwischen denen Käufer wählen können. Für Speicherplatz stehen 64 GB, 128 GB oder sogar 256 GB zur Auswahl. Dazu kommen noch 4 GB, 6 GB oder 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher. Der zweite SIM-Kartensteckplatz kann für eine Erweiterung des Speicherplatzes genutzt werden (um bis zu 512 GB). In Sachen Kameras ist das Zenfone 5Z mit einem Dual-Kamera-Setup bestückt - 12 MP und 8 MP. Unter anderem stehen Dual-LED-Blitz, 4-K-Videoaufnahme und ein HDR-Modus zur Verfügung. Die Selfie-Kamera hat 8 MP und ermöglicht Full-HD-Videoaufnahmen. Die ersten Bewertungen der Kameras sind im Vergleich zu anderen Flaggschiffen nicht überragend. Das könnte ein App-Update aber ausbessern. Weitere Eigenschaften des Gerätes sind Bluetooth 5.0, das mehrere gleichzeitige Verbindungen ermöglicht; eine Fingerabdrucksensor auf der Rückseite; USB-Typ-C für Aufladen und Datenübertragung; ein 3300-mAh-Akku, der alles antreibt. Das Zenfone 5Z ist außerdem sowohl mit zwei Lautsprechern für klareren und volleren Klang als auch einem traditionellen 3,5-mm-Audioanschluss für private Musikwiedergabe ausgestattet. Wie schon beim Vorgänger wurde beim Zenfone 5Z viel in einen sehr guten Preis verpackt. Doch die Konkurrenz ist beachtlich, es gibt viele andere Geräte von Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus, Vivo und Oppo, die Asus’ Angebot nahekommen könnten.
