70% MSI Claw A1M Handheld 1TB – at £300 less, it is worth buying?

Having gamed strictly at a desk for 99% of the time over the past 20 years, I've never tried a handheld PC before. Well, that changes today with our first look at the MSI Claw A1M. Can this tiny handheld and portable PC satisfy when gaming, without sitting at a desk? The MSI Claw didn't get a great reception when it launched – but they have cut the prices twice in 2024. So when they asked us if we could take a look at it now with the 1TB version priced at £499 (HERE), we thought it might be an interesting video. For clarity (and it is quite confusing) — When this hand held launched the 512GB was £699 and the 1TB version was £799 (HERE). MSI dropped the prices by £100 earlier this year and now the 1TB has a further £200 price cut. Just be aware you get the right version, as Currys also list the 512gb version at the same £499 price (HERE) – as of 11th November 2024.

Regarding the display, overall, it’s a decent IPS screen. However, I believe that for the console’s price, they could have included an OLED screen, like the one in the Steam Deck. Not only would an OLED display look more modern and be better for gaming, but it would also make the console stand out compared to the ROG Ally and Legion GO, which also have IPS displays.

In general, MSI tends to be one of the best choices for performance per dollar. Even with some promising results, overall, the Claw isn't there yet. With so much desire to prove themselves in the gaming space, I imagine Intel is going to be putting a lot of effort into improving this generation of Arc. For now, expect the usual shortcomings as an early adopter playing a balancing act between your games, either running really well or facing a bunch of hiccups and underwhelming performance. We probably won't see a dramatic improvement in the next few weeks, but I have my fingers crossed that in 3 to 6 months we can revisit the MSI Claw and have a much happier ending to this story.

The MSI Claw (starting at $699) could be the next great gaming handheld. While its 7-inch LCD display and overall design are reminiscent of the Asus ROG Ally and Steam Deck, MSI’s machine is the first such handheld to sport a new Intel Core Ultra “Meteor Lake” chip. According to the company, Intel’s processor gives the Claw better performance and battery life than handhelds featuring an AMD chip. I got to try the MSI Claw during CES 2024 and was impressed by its striking appearance and how light it felt to hold. I also like how cool it remained even when the CPU ran at near 100%. The sharp 1080p and smooth 120Hz display are also a highlight. It’s too early to tell if the MSI Claw can topple the Steam Deck, but I think it should find a spot on our best handheld gaming console list. Here are my initial thoughts on the MSI Claw.

The MSI Claw (starting at $699) could be the next great gaming handheld. And that’s the story of the MSI Claw A8. Chances are if you’re reading this, you’re already the kind of person that’s ready to take a big hit on the price. And if you do fall into that audience, and you don’t already have a Z1 Extreme system, this is a great option. Performance and battery life are good, the ergonomics are great, and this is a great-looking option. But while it is indeed a good option, I have one piece of advice for you: wait. The ROG Xbox Ally X is just around the corner, and so is the Xbox UI too. And in my time testing this, it’s what handhelds have been waiting for this entire time in terms of unlocking power and stamina. This could also mean that Ryzen Z1 Extreme systems are back on the table too with this game-changing update, and you could save yourself some pennies. But in the immediate, if you are chasing speeds and feeds, this is the one to buy right now.

I came to Computex 2025 fully expecting the Asus ROG Ally 2 to give us a first look at the power of AMD Z2 Extreme, but out of left field comes the MSI Claw A8 to steal the show. This is probably (definitely) because Microsoft is forcing Asus to keep everything hush until the Xbox Handheld reveal this non-E3 season in the summer. But this game gave MSI the perfect chance to slide into the picture and steal Asus’ thunder, and it worked gloriously. MSI has delivered on a thoroughly impressive device that feels nostalgic and fun with a blocky design and bright colors. The AMD Z2 Extreme also delivers on impressive performance so far, with 45 frames per second while playing Final Fantasy XV with medium settings and 60+ fps on Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. The overall controls feel even better, too, with clicker face buttons, rounded-off triggers, and option buttons that are larger to hit. Hopefully, MSI can keep up the momentum and ship the Claw A8 before the Asus ROG Ally 2 releases.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

Intel Arc 8-Core: Integrierte Grafikkarte basierend auf die Xe LPG Architektur (ähnlich zu den dedizierten Arc GPUs, jedoch mit Fokus auf Effizienz). Bietet alle 8 Xe Kerne (128 Xe Vector Engines) und 8 Raytracing Einheiten.

Intel Arc 140V: Schnelle integrierte Grafikkarte, die in den schnelleren Intel Lunar Lake Prozessoren zum Einsatz kommt. Die 140V verfügt über 8 Xe²-Architekturkerne (Battlemage), die mit bis zu 2.050 MHz laufen, und 8 Raytracing-Einheiten. Sie ist DirectX 12 Ultimate-fähig und unterstützt alle modernen Video-Codecs. 

AMD Radeon 890M: Starke RDNA3+ basierende integrierte Grafikkarte (iGPU) mit 16 Compute Units (= 1024 Unified Shader) und einer Taktung von bis zu 2,9 GHz.

Intel Meteor Lake-H:

Ultra 7 155H: Auf der Meteor-Lake-Architektur basierender High-End Mobilprozessor. Bietet 6 Performance-Kerne mit bis zu 4,8 GHz und 8+2 Effizienzkerne mit bis zu 3,8 GHz und kann 22 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeiten.

Intel Lunar Lake: Launching in September 2024 with Xe2 graphics and few CPU cores.

Core Ultra 7 258V: Ein Notebook-Prozessor der oberen Mittelklasse der Lunar Lake Serie. Der SoC verfügt über 4 brandneue E-Kerne und 4 leicht verbesserte P-Kerne verfügt, die mit bis zu 4,8 GHz laufen, zusammen mit der neuen Arc 140V iGPU und 32 GB integriertem LPDDR5x-8533 RAM. Eine neue 47 TOPS neuronale Engine, TB 4 und PCIe 5 SSD Unterstützung sind ebenfalls enthalten.

AMD Strix Halo/Point (Zen 5/5c, Ryzen AI 300): Ryzen AI 3/5/7/9/Max chips. Available starting July 2024. RDNA 3+ integrated graphics, PCIe 4

Ryzen Z2 Extreme: Eine relativ leistungsstarke Strix Point Familie Prozessor, die im Anfang 2025 vorgestellt wurde und für Handhelds gedacht ist Die APU wird mit 8 CPU-Kernen (3 Zen 5-Kerne und 5 Zen 5c-Kerne) beschrieben, die mit bis zu 5,0 GHz laufen, zusammen mit der Radeon 880M-Grafikkarte mit 16 CUs. Die Ryzen AI Engine ist im Gegensatz zum Ryzen AI 7 PRO 360 nicht enthalten.

7.00: Dieses Displayformat ist im mittleren Bereich für Smartphones. Man hat damit den Kompromiss zwischen guter Sichtbarkeit, Details und Auflösung am Bildschirm und trotzdem bringt man es in Hosentaschen unter.

8.00: Bei dieser Display-Größe stehen große Smartphones und ein paar kleine Tablets zur Verfügung. Anders als bei den meisten Smartphones sieht man mehr am Bildschirm, mehr Details und kann größere Auflösungen nutzen. Für fehlsichtige Menschen sind solche Formate besser. In der Hosentasche sind solche Geräte aber nicht mehr leicht unterzubringen und ganz leicht sind sie wohl auch nicht.

Auch wenn Verbalbewertungen in diesem Bereich gar nicht so schlecht klingen ("genügend" oder "befriedigend"), meist sind es Euphemismen, die eine Klassifikation als unterdurchschnittliches Notebook verschleiern.
