Alles in allem erwirbt man mit dem HTC U11 ein hervorragendes Smartphone, welches derzeit der rechenstärkste Androide am Markt ist. Das 5,44-Zoll-Display gehört zu den besten seiner Art, der interne Speicher über 64 Gigabyte lässt sich problemlos erweitern. Auch in Sachen Funkverbindungen ist man mit LTE, WLAN ac, Bluetooth 4.2 und NFC bestens ausgestattet. Fotos, Videoaufnahmen und Musikklang kassieren allesamt ein "Sehr gut".

Mit dem HTC U11 verhält es sich dann doch etwas anders, denn das Design werde ich so schnell nicht wieder vergessen. Ich war sofort in die Glasrückseite verliebt und wurde über den Testzeitraum nicht müde, mehrmals täglich zum Mikrofasertuch zu greifen, um es auf Hochglanz zu polieren. Klar muss das nicht jedem gefallen, aber HTC wagt es hier, aus der Masse herauszustechen und ich finde, das muss belohnt werden.

Das HTC U11 kann im Test mit einer großen Vielfalt an Funktionen und besonderen Ausstattungs­merkmalen punkten, die im Alltag wirklich hilfreich sind. Dazu gehören Edge Sense, die intelligente Audiowiedergabe sowie ein starkes Herzstück im Form des Snapdragon 835 und ein gutes Display sowie die Unterwasser-Nutzung. Auch mit der Handy-Kamera lassen sich bei guten Lichtverhältnissen gute Ergebnisse erzielen. Schwächen zeigt das Modell wiederum bei Low-Light-Aufnahmen der Selfie-Kamera und auch das Gehäuse ist trotz der verarbeiteten Materialien bei der Nutzung zum Teil unpraktisch. Da hilft es auch nichts, dem Lieferumfang ein Putztuch und ein zusätzliches Case beizupacken. Ansonsten wird das HTC U11 einem Highend-Smartphone gerecht und muss sich hinter einem Samsung Galaxy S8 oder iPhone 7 nicht verstecken. Es ist einfach ein Flaggschiff zum "Drücken"!

Das Fazit fällt gemischt aus. Das Design fällt auf, doch die Rückseite glänzt mir zu sehr. Das Display ist super, jedoch der Rand darum nicht. Bei der Power und der Kamera gibt es glaube ich nicht viel zu meckern, hier hat HTC das abgeliefert, was Stand Sommer 2017 möglich ist. Nun bin ich selbst auf die Eindrücke aus dem Alltag gespannt, denn bei einer Funktion wie Edge Sense kann ich mir noch nicht wirklich vorstellen, dass man diese oft nutzt.

In a vacuum, HTC’s U11 is a perfectly adequate phone. But context matters, and the price of that adequacy needs to be considered. A $650 (at minimum!) phone with this set of specifications is ludicrous in a world where OnePlus’ 5 – or even 3T (from a year ago) – can be had for $200 less with largely better specs. For all the praise it got around the web, frankly, I expected better. In the end, the HTC U11 is just another adequate “flagship” with gimmicky features and the bloated price tag we’ve come to expect from the big name OEMs. If you’re a big camera buff, you might be able to justify the price in your own head – it’s a ridiculously well-performing device in that regard – but for people that don’t put a premium on camera performance…there’s better devices out there for cheaper.

Where it doesn’t perform so well is with zooming and bokeh — though given the lack of a dual-cam setup, that’s not too much of a surprise. If you can, it’s best to move towards a subject rather than zoom in for tighter cropping. And although the U11 can capture high-quality portrait images, it can’t replicate that shallow depth-of-field effect that you get with the iPhone 7 Plus’s Portrait mode or similar systems.

Without app customization, Edge Sense is basically just an overbuilt app launcher that can only launch two apps. While you can use it to take pictures in the default camera app, I found it more convenient to just press the onscreen shutter button or volume button to take a picture. Once HTC launches full app customization, that may change, but for now Edge Sense isn't all that useful.

For me, the ultra-bling mirror-finish is tasteless, the sort of chromed fingerprint magnet mirroring used on cheap plastic gadgets to make them look more expensive. Yes, I know – and you know – that this is Gorilla Glass and that HTC has ‘layered highly refractive precious minerals’ but the effect certainly won’t please everyone. In addition to the ‘Sapphire Blue’ here, you can also get the U11 in red, silver and white, plus ‘Brilliant Black’ and I do wonder whether the latter might not have put me off the styling so much!

The U11 harkens back to a simpler time when a phone’s body was celebrated and not just something that got in the way. If phones with visible bezels and frames that stand out are truly a dying breed, then HTC has given them a proper and fitting send-off with the U11. The U Ultra felt like a bogged-down, staid phone, but the U11 is light, invigorating, and just plain fun to use.

It has top-of-line specs, a brilliant camera, great pricing and plenty of features such as the touch sensitive bezel or the the noise cancellation headphones. My daily driver is the Samsung S8 and in many ways, the U11 is better. But, I’ve been spoilt by Samsung’s nearly bezel-less design and the 2:1 aspect ratio which I personally consider as the direction in which all high-end phones will be headed. You may not agree with me and that’s fine, and if you are in that camp, I doubt you’ll find anything as good as the HTC U11 on the market for its given price point.

Modell: Gerade als man dachte, HTC würde keine Phones mehr herausbringen, überrascht uns HTC mit dem neuen HTC U11 Flaggschiff-Modell. Das HTC U11 wird durch Qualcomms Snapdragon 835 SoC mit einer Adreno 540 GPU und wahlweise 64 GB UFS Flashspeicher und 4 GB RAM oder 128 GB Flashspeicher und 6 GB RAM angetrieben. Während die Spezifikation verglichen mit Speichermonstern wie dem One Plus 5 und seinen 6 GB bzw. 8 GB RAM nicht beeindruckend sein mag, ist Vernunft hier das Schlüsselwort. In der Android-Welt gibt es viele einmalige Gimmicks, die als bahnbrechend eingestuft wurden, sich aber nie durchsetzten. Wie verhält es sich also dieses Mal? Edge Sense wäre so ein Merkmal. Es startet die Kamera automatisch, wenn das Phone zusammengedrückt wird, ist jedoch mit fast unendlichen Möglichkeiten neu programmierbar. Das Aussehen des Gehäuses des HTC U11 sollte User unmittelbar an das U Play und U Ultra erinnern, obwohl das U11 nun anstatt eine Vollmetall-Gehäuses über eine Kombination aus Glas und Metall verfügt. Es ist noch immer ausreichend fest und robust, doch mit dem Glasglanz sammelt das Phone Fingerabdrücke. Zugegebenermaßen kann nicht geleugnet werden, dass das U11 großartig aussieht.

Das U11 verfügt zwar nicht über einen AMOLED-Bildschirm, den man in Samsungs Flaggschiff antrifft. Doch der Super LCD5 Quad-HD-Bildschirm ist dennoch lebendig und liefert ein scharfes und knackiges Bild. Außerdem deckt er sRGB zu immerhin 166 Prozent ab. Zudem ist der Bildschirm 512 cd/m² hell und übertrifft das Samsung Galaxy S8 und Google Pixel XL (437 cd/m² bzw. 396 cd/m²) in puncto Helligkeit. In puncto Audio und Ein-/Ausgabe-Features ist das U11 allerdings etwas enttäuschend. Das beginnt bei der Kopfhörerbuchse, die fehlt. Während USB-Type-C vielseitig ist, gibt es nur einen solchen Port. Daher kann man nicht gleichzeitig Kopfhörer anstecken, wenn das Phone gerade lädt. Im Rückblick sind die Boom Sound Lautsprecher des U11 ziemlich beeindruckend, sie liefern akzeptable Audio-Qualität mit etwas kraftvoller Lautstärke. Damit sind Flaggschiff-Modelle mit nur einem Lautsprecher wie das Galaxy S8 unterlegen und sogar verglichen mit Apples iPphone 7 gewinnt das U11 problemlos.

Das U11 verfügt über eine 12-MP-Kamera an der Rückseite, die mit ähnlicher Hardware wie Apple, Google und sogar Samsung erstaunliche Bilder liefert. Allerdings ist die 16-MP-Frontkamera durchwachsen. Sie ist nicht schlecht, jedoch nur in etwa mittelmäßig. Mit 9 Stunden und 38 Minuten ist die Akkulaufzeit des U11 wirklich nicht herausragend sondern nur in etwa durchschnittlich. Sie bleibt eine eineinhalb Stunden hinter dem engsten Konkurrenten zurück. Im Endeffekt kann HTC noch immer Phones mit guter Qualität herstellen, obwohl sie die Führung schon vor Jahren verloren haben.

Das HTC U11 ist ein High-End-Android-Smartphone das letztlich genau das tut, was die meisten anderen High-End-Android-Smartphones auch tun. Was es aus der Masse herausstechen lässt ist die Rückseite aus flüssigem Glas. Das Design mit seinen stetig je nach Blickwinkel wechselnden Farben ist ein echter Hingucker. HTC hatte schon immer den richtigen Riecher wenn es um herausragendes Design und gute Verarbeitungsqualität geht. Es überrascht daher nicht wirklich, dass das U11 diesbezüglich Spitzenklasse ist. Anstelle einer reinen Metallkonstruktion, die in dieser Klasse üblich ist, setzt HTC auf eine Mischung aus Glas und Metall. Mit abgerundeten Ecken, abgerundeten Kanten an Vorder- und Rückseite sowie einem Aluminiumrahmen zwischen den beiden Glasseiten ist das U11 ein wahrer Handschmeichler. Beim Display entschied man sich für bewährtes: ein 16:9 5,5-Zoll Quad-HD Super LCD 5 Display mit herausragender Qualität. Es ist scharf, verfügt über sehr großzügige Blickwinkel und lebendige Farben. Die Sichtbarkeit im Freien ist kein Problem, in geschlossenen Räumen oder Nachts fühlt es sich jedoch nicht selten zu hell an.

Bei der Hardware hat sich HTC nicht lumpen lassen. Das U11 ist ausgestattet mit Qualcomms Snapdragon 835 SoC gepaart mit 4 GB RAM. Die Bedienung geht folglich sehr flott und flüssig vonstatten. Der Touchscreen reagiert sehr schnell, Scrollen ist sehr flüssig und Apps und Spiele mit hohen Anforderungen stellen das U11 vor keine echte Herausforderung. Auch Multi-Tasking funktioniert sehr gut und schnell. Ausgeliefert wird das Smartphone mit Android 7.1, was dem U11 einen Vorteil gegenüber dem S8 oder LG G6 gibt. Die bereits aus dem HTC 10 bekannte Kombination aus Woofer und Tweeter sitzt auch im U11, allerdings wurde sie spürbar verbessert. Die maximale Lautstärke ist bedeutend höher und das Klangbild viel klarer. Um dies zu ermöglichen, wird das gesamte Gehäuse des U11 als Klangkörper verwendet. Der Klang kann in der Hand wortwörtlich gespürt werden. Dem U11 fehlt der Kopfhöreranschluss, was aber dank der hervorragenden Audioquailtät des USB-C-Ports verschmerzbar ist. Außerdem befinden sich in der Schachtel ein Paar USonic-Kopfhörer sowie ein USB-C-auf-3,5-mm-Adapter mit eingebautem DAC und hervorragender Audio-Qualität für all diejenigen, die nicht auf ihre aktuellen Kopfhörer verzichten wollen. Das herausstechende Feature des U11 ist jedoch Edge Sense. Dank Drucksensoren in der unten Hälfte des U11-Rahmens kann das Smartphone spüren, wenn es gedrückt wird. Dies kann wiederum genutzt werden um beispielsweise die Taschenlampe zu aktivieren, die Kamera (oder eine beliebige andere App) zu starten, ein Foto direkt aus dem Standby heraus aufzunehmen, oder den Google Assistant zu aktivieren. Das HTC U11 ist eine Bereicherung des High-End-Segments, kann es aber nicht mit allen Konkurrenten aufnehmen. Nichtsdestotrotz ist es bis dato das einzige Telefon, dass zusammendrücken als Bedienungsart unterstützt.

Qualcomm Adreno 540: Grafikchip für Smartphones und Tablets, integriert im Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. Bietet eine vergleichbare Architektur wie der Adreno 530, mit leichten Optimierungen und höheren Taktraten dank 10nm Herstellungsprozess.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
