Well, we are happy to report that Dell’s Precision 15 3520 is a nice entry-level 15-inch workstation that will get the work done, although entry-level doesn’t mean affordable. Quite the opposite.

Das Dell Precision 3520-N0KF3 ist eine mobile Workstation mit starker Leistung und verbessertem Design. Das Design des Precision 3520 ähnelt verständlicherweise der modernen Dell Latitude Serie. Beide Produktlinien fallen in die Business-Kategorie. Daher macht es Sinn, dass sie das gleiche Design nutzen. User erhalten ein gänzlich schwarzes, robustes und einfache Gehäuse mit sehr kompakten Abmessungen und einem überraschend niedrigen Gewicht von zirka 2,23 kg. Der Bildschirmdeckel ist aus robusten Kunststoff-Material mit etwas gummiertem Bildschirmdeckel, was für eine ausgezeichnete Griffigkeit sorgt. Dafür sind Fingerabdrücke und Schmutz gut sichtbar. Der zentrale Bereich des Bildschirmdeckels mit dem Dell-Logo wirkt nur bei mäßiger bis hoher Druckanwendung etwas nachgiebig. Dabei zeigen sich keine Veränderungen am eingeschalteten LCD-Bildschirm. Die gut gemachten Metallscharnieren wippen und wackeln nicht. Der einzige Nachteil der Scharniere ist, dass sie zu fest sind und User den Laptop nur mit beiden Händen öffnen können. Der Laptop bietet ein Standard-Tastatur-Layout mit etwas konkaven Tasten, gut integriertem Hintergrundlicht, langem Hubweg und zufriedenstellendem Druckwiderstand. In der Mitte der Tastatur befindet sich Dells Version des TrackPoint. Das Touchpad ist ideal. Die Geit-Oberfläche ist gut und die Maustasten sind gut positioniert und bieten einen langen Hubweg und einen angenehmen und weich wirkenden Widerstand. Das Precision 3520 strotzt dank dem Intel Core i5-7440HQ, einer etwas leistungsstärkeren Version des Core i5 -7300HQ, plus allen Intel vPro Features, die für Business-User wichtig sind, einer Nvidia Quadro M620 Grafikkarte (2 GB GDDR5), einem großen Akku mit einer Kapazität von 68 Wh, 16 GB DDR4-2400 RAM und Unterstützung von M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD Laufwerken vor Kraft. In der Praxis ist das alles, was User von einer mobilen Workstation brauchen. Das Dell Precision 3520 verfügt über einen Full-HD-Bildschirm mit IPS-Technologie namens LG Display 156WF6. Seine Diagonale misst 15,6 Zoll (39,62 cm) und die Auflösung beträgt 1.920 x 1.080 Pixel. Das Seitenverhältnis ist 16:9 und die Pixeldichte beläuft sich auf 142 PPI bei einem Punktabstand von 0,18 mm. Zudem bietet das Dell Precision 3520 angenehme Blickwinkel. Bei Nutzung ohne externen Bildschirm ist die Full-HD-IPS-Version ziemlich gut und eignet sich für Büro-Arbeit, Gaming, Multimedia und Web-Surfen. Das mit 25 mm relativ schlanke Gerät bietet alle notwendigen Anschlüsse. An der linken Seite befinden sich ein USB-Type-C-3.1-Port mit Thunderbolt 3 Unterstützung, ein SD-Kartenleser und ein normaler USB-3.0-Port. Die rechte Seite bietet einen SIM-Kartenslot, eine 3,5 mm Audiobuchse, einen weiteren USB-3.0-Port und – ziemlich überraschend – VGA für einen externen Monitor. Zu heiß! Das Precision 3530 ist das neueste Einstiegsgerät des Herstellers Dell. Es wird durch eine Nvidia Quadro P600 und eine neue Xeon-CPU von Intel angetrieben und ist somit ziemlich leistungsfähig. Beim Temperaturmanagement und den Geräuschemissionen gibt es aber noch Verbesserungspotential.

For the hardware, I really recommend getting a configuration with a better CPU. This Intel Core i5-8365U processor is just not sufficient for rendering work. Maybe Dell should explore AMD’s Ryzen processors as an alternative? They offer better base clocks with similar boost clock speeds. Looking at the market now, AMD-powered laptops are much lower in price, yet still with 4 cores and 8 threads.

EN→DEDell’s latest Precision 15 3560 is a bit underwhelming because of its lack of identity. Ultimately, it is a rebrander Latitude 15 5520, which is generally not bad, if it offered something exclusive. Probably the only thing that we found is different, is the boost ideology of the processor. Instead of throttling the CPU down to 17W, like the Latitude we just mentioned, the Precision stabilizes at 21W under extreme workload scenarios.

EN→DEOne thing we want to mention before we put everything into perspective is that there are better devices for 3D manipulation, especially if you can make use of the CUDA cores. Indeed, having a professional-grade graphics card is great, but this one is on the level of a GTX 1650, so it is clearly one of the lowest spec proper GPUs out there. Perhaps people using workstations will agree – having slots for RAM and storage is pretty important in the industry. Well, yes, you don’t get ECC memory support, but the general idea of having a high amount of memory and storage is refreshing. By the way, let’s not forget the optional IR face recognition, fingerprint reader, and LTE connectivity you can get. We are waiting to get the HP ZBook Power G8, and Lenovo ThinkPad P15v Gen 2 in our office, so stay tuned for direct comparisons between them in the near future.

EN→DEAt the end of the day, there are a couple of things we would like to address. First – it is about time manufacturers ditch the idea of even thinking to offer a 768p TN panel, regardless if we’re talking about a budget notebook or a mobile workstation like the Precision 15 3570. Secondly, we would like to praise Dell for its environment-conscious policies. Stuff like this can quickly add up and make a huge change for the world. As a workstation, the laptop seems pretty decent. Its pro-grade graphics card is certified to work with a wide variety of professional software – whether it is for civil engineering, architecture, 3D modeling, or else. And if you happen to own the RTX A500 – you will get ray tracing support on a hardware level, which is fantastic. Dell Precision 15 3570’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It’s good to see that its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. However, the color coverage of 53% of the sRGB gamut, means that the image looks a bit dull.

EN→DEOnce again we have experienced Dell’s ultimate delivery of a professional notebook, and just when we thought that this was one of the best devices for its money, they butchered the battery life. It has 4 hours of Web browsing and 5 hours of video playback. No offense, but that’s pathetic. Who puts a 42Wh battery on a workstation? Let’s remind you that our configuration lacks a dedicated GPU. And some gaming laptops with behemoth hardware actually last for more than 10 hours of Web browsing. Dell Precision 15 3580’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Moreover, the backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. Unfortunately, the color coverage is limited (52% of sRGB). Yes, the upgradeability is good, and the laptop is pretty easy to get inside of. Its port selection is on point, while the input devices are great.

Dell: Dell ist ein 1984 gegründeter US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen. Die Produktpalette umfasst unter anderem Desktops, Notebooks, Speichersysteme, Monitore, Server, Drucker, Unterhaltungselektronik und Peripheriegeräte. Dell bietet Laptops an, die ich für verschiedene Einsatzbereiche eignen, z. B. Business-Laptops, Gaming-Laptops, Ultra-Portables und Workstations. Die Business-Notebooks von Dell aus den Latitude- und Precision-Serien sind eine Option für professionelle Anwender und Unternehmen.
2023 hatte Dell einen ungefähren Marktanteil von 17% am weltweiten PC-Absatz und war damit die Nummer 3 nach Lenovo und HP.
Für Gaming-Enthusiasten ist die Marke Alienware von Dell für Gaming-Notebooks vorgesehen.
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.
AMD FirePro W5130M: Professionelle Mittelklasse Workstation-Grafikkarte von AMD mit 512 Shadern, 128 Bit Speicherbus und GDDR5 Grafikspeicher.
NVIDIA Quadro M620: Mittelklasse-Workstation Grafikkarte der Maxwell Architektur basierend auf dem 28nm GM107-Chip, wie die alte Quadro M1000M bzw Geforce GTX 950M.
NVIDIA Quadro P600: Pascal basierend Einstiegsgrafiklösung für Workstations mit 64 Bit Speicherbus. Wahrscheinlich basierend auf der GeForce MX150.

Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.
NVIDIA T600 Laptop GPU: Professionelle Mid-Range Notebook-Grafikkarte der Turing Generation. Mit 896 Shadern vergleichbar mit der GTX 1650 Consumer Grafikkarte. Bietet keine Raytracing und Tensor-Kerne im Gegensatz zu den stärkeren RTX Modellen.
NVIDIA RTX A1000 Laptop GPU: Professionelle High-End Notebook-Grafikkarte und ähnlich zu der Consumer RTX 3050 für Laptops mit 2.048 CUDA Kernen. Erhältlich in verschiedenen Varianten von 35 - 95 W maximalen Stromverbrauch und unterschiedlicher Leistung.
