Fazit: The Compaq nc2400, HP's newest corporate ultraportable, is not the lightest laptop on the market, but it strikes an appealing balance between features and portability for a lower price than competitive models. Though it weighs less than 4 pounds, it has a larger display than most other 4-pound models, as well as a comfortable keyboard and an optical drive. Best of all, the nc2400, with a starting price of $1,599, costs less than competitive models, such as the $1,649 Fujitsu LifeBook P7120 and the $1,799 ThinkPad X60s.

Fazit: HP’s first entry into ultraportable territory in more than a year doesn’t offer much in the way of flash or power. What the Compaq nc2400 provides is security, durability, and endurance, along with a budget-conscious price. Unlike the sleek, shiny designs from the competition, HP’s Compaq nc2400 looks like a miniature version of nearly every other notebook in HP’s conservative, matte, all-charcoal business line. The six-cell battery included with our system puts the weight at only 3.6 pounds; it juts out an extra inch from the rear of the notebook. The notebook’s 12.1-inch widescreen is a handy compact size for use in small spaces like airplanes, while assuring that there is enough room on the machine for a full-sized keyboard.

Fazit: A first for HP, the Compaq nc2400 ($1,599 direct) ultraportable is a long-missing link in HP's lineup. This tiny laptop weighs just 3.6 pounds yet features an extended battery and a built-in optical drive. For frequent travelers, these are huge selling points, especially on such a light notebook. But its lackluster performance and some subpar components leave it a step behind our ultraportable Editors' Choice winner, the Lenovo ThinkPad X60s. The 12.1-inch screen is slightly brighter than the ThinkPad X60s's, and this is especially noticeable when you put them side by side. The nc2400 comes only with a pointing stick and is a little less responsive than the Lenovo TrackPoint. If you have to have a Touchpad, check out the Gateway E-100M.

Fazit: HP's latest ultraportable, the HP Compaq nc2400 comes with a moderate $1649 price (as of 6/26/2006). This business-minded model should appeal to road warriors who need a laptop with long battery life--but it's no performance powerhouse. Business users may find the nc2400's fingerprint reader appealing; the reader sits on the right edge of the handrest. Unlike other HP notebooks, this model eschews the familiar Touchpad in favor of an eraserhead pointer, which sits in the center of the keyboard. The 12.1-inch wide-screen display looked nice, with good color and detail.

Fazit: Although the battery life could be better, HP has created a superb ultra-portable package in the nc2400. You’ve basically got a machine that looks and feels as good as a ThinkPad X series, but has the added advantage of an integrated optical drive. And with a three year, collect and return warranty as standard, you’re getting peace of mind thrown in as well. The nc2400 is definitely the best business focussed ultra-portable notebook that I’ve seen. Even for an individual buyer, this thin and light laptop has a great deal to offer. The specification is good, the warranty is impressive and the ergonomics are first rate. It seems churlish to complain about three hours of battery life on a notebook this small, but Sony has raised the bar so high in this area that every other manufacturer is playing catch up. But when you factor price into the equation, you can forgive the nc2400 for its modest battery life. In fact you could happily specify an extended battery with this machine and still end up with a superb notebook at a great price.

Fazit: A great-value ultraportable with a flexible range of options to make up for slightly disappointing battery life. From the moment you open up the graphite-coloured lid of the HP Compaq nc2400, you know you're onto a good thing. The 12.1in TFT has a crisp 1,280 x 800 resolution and doesn't suffer from reflections (unlike the Sony VAIO opposite), because it doesn't have a glossy coating. It doesn't appear quite as bright as the TX3's screen, but this is an illusion - the only real disadvantage is that colours aren't as saturated. The keyboard's bold white lettering is among the clearest we've seen, and the layout is excellent. Along with Dell, HP sticks with the tried and tested format of a desktop-style keyboard, keeping the Ctrl, Windows and punctuation keys in the normal places. As you type, there's no sponginess and the trackpoint control, while not to everyone's taste, is much more precise than a Touchpad.

Fazit: The nc2400 could be a Thinkpad X60 clone - except it's a total no-show in the performance department. Its 1.2-GHz Intel Core Solo CPU is surprisingly slow. (The old Pentium M is faster.) Wired: Volume control Touchpad. Extremely sturdy chassis, Fingerprint reader for security. Lovely 1280x800-Pixel widescreen. Optional snap-on base. Solid battery life. Tired: No mouse-control Touchpad. Baby-size 40-GByte hard drive. CPU sucks.

HP’s security-conscious Compaq nc2400 may be a corporate user’s dream but its battery life is more of a nightmare

Fazit: Ultra light, dual-core processor, biometric security; sounds like the specification list of a beautiful machine, doesn’t it? The Hewlett-Packard Compaq nc2400 packs a good litany of technology into its sales sheet, but you would be right for thinking there’s more than a hint of reticence in our introduction. When we first picked up this diminutive laptop we got quite excited at the Centrino Duo moniker on the wrist rest, but on closer inspection things aren’t quite as rosy as we had first hoped. When you’re talking portability, the HP Compaq ticks nearly all the right boxes. It’s supremely light; weighing in at a paltry 1.3Kg it’s easily the lightest dual-core machine we’ve seen. The optical drive – a writable, multi-format, dual-layer DVD drive – is fully integrated so there’s no messing around with external units.

Fazit: The NC-2400 is a lightweight small machine made with stunning workmanship and precision. It offers excellent portability and unparalled physical durability, even stacked against the legendary ThinkPads of which I own 2. System performance was abysmal. Raw power, while (just) sufficient for business applications and home entertainment, gamers and other heavy users should consider a slightly larger laptop with a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processor. If you travel every day and need a small durable laptop, then this is a machine to be considered. I hesitate to call the machine ideal however because it performs very badly in every respect. Because of this If you really don’t need the small size and weight, this laptop is not recommended.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

Es handelt sich um einen onboard Grafikchip und kann als schneller getakteter GMA 900 bezeichnet werden (auf Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipsatz) mit 400 MHz Kerntakt, 4 Pixel-Pipelines, Shared Memory, Direct X 9 Vertex Shader 3.0 und Transorm und Lighting Support sowie HDTV Hardware Motion Compensation. Der Chip ist in unserem Grafikkarten-Vergleich in der zweitschlechtesten Leistungsklasse 5 (1=beste, 6=schlechteste) eingeordnet und kann daher nur für ältere Spiele sinvoll eingesetzt werden. Für Büroanwendungen und zum Surfen reicht es aber ohne Probleme. Der Vorteil von integrierten Grafiklösungen ist ein geringer Stromverbrauch, was längere Akkulaufzeiten ermöglicht. Speziell für Subnotebooks, wo Mobilität wichtig ist, ist das nützlich. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 ist bei den integrierten Grafik-Lösungen derzeit sehr empfehlenswert. Intel Core Solo

Dieser Prozessor ist ein Nachfolger des Pentium M und zugleich die Einzelkernversion des Core Duo. Dank der auf 65nm verringerten Strukturbreite hat er einen geringeren Stromverbrauch als Pentium M (maximal 27 Watt). Die Leistung ist etwa mit einem gleichgetaktetem Pentium M vergleichbar (etwas schneller dank leichter Verbesserungen) Aufgrund geringen Stromverbrauchs eignen sich diese Prozessoren auch für Subnotebooks. 12.1 Zoll Display

Dieses Displayformat kann man als grosses Subnotebook-Format bezeichnen. Der Vorteil liegt darin, dass das ganze Notebook relativ klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil relativ wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten etwas anstrengend für die Augen ist. Hohe Auflösungen sind schwer nutzbar. Prüfen Sie auch in unserer DPI Liste, welche Displays wie fein aufgelöst sind.
