Weniger überzeugt haben mich im Gegenzug das kaum veränderte Design der Software, die sichtbaren Schwächen der hoch gelobten Kamera und die eher durchschnittliche Akku-Ausdauer. Ebenso ist beim Klang noch Luft nach oben. So bleibt letztlich das unschöne Gefühl, dass die aktuell 609 Euro, die das Smartphone aufruft, nicht gerechtfertigt sind. Im direkten Vergleich liefern leistungstechnisch etwas schwächere Phones wie das LG G5 oder das Huawei P9 bessere Gesamtpakete bei deutlich attraktiverem Preis. Für die 4-Sterne-Wertung reicht es gerade so.

Der Blitz leuchtet sehr lang, aber auch sehr stark, weshalb Motive schnell überstrahlen. Dagegen gelingen Makroaufnahmen sehr gut, was Farben, Schärfe und Helligkeit angeht. Praktisch ist auch der physische Auslöser.

With a fresh new design language and a bold new name (which includes the new ‘X’ and the previous ‘Z’), I expected the innards on the new flagship to showcase at least a bit of change (if not too much). Sadly, this was not the case and while the 23MP sensor does not stand up to the imaging quality delivered by the competition (even below its price bracket), the smartphone as a whole is an indicator that Sony should just shut shop and let go of the smartphone business if it plans to deliver something similar in its next flagship.

The Xperia XZ has a nice, sexy form factor with its premium metal body and 2.5D glass implementation. Its 5.2-inch Full HD display is appreciated and makes operating with one hand fairly easy. One of my personal favorites is its dust- and water-resistant body that I could take with me on beach trips and the like. Performance-wise, we don’t have much complaints on the XZ as it was able to keep up with us during the entire week of using it as our primary phone. The implementation of USB-Type C is also well-appreciated as a sense of future-proofing the device.

As I mentioned, the Xperia XZ is a bit of a tough sell at $699. Sure it is flagship material, but it is also missing a great number of things that make other $699 smartphones worth the price. One is the display. A 1080p display is great for 5.2-inches, but not great for a price tag of $699. The other is the deactivated fingerprint scanner. With most smartphones, even budget ones that are under $200, coming out with fingerprint scanners, it’s tough to see why Sony opted to leave it out, at least not turn it on, with the Xperia XZ. Especially where it probably cost them more to leave the fingerprint scanner dormant on the US models, only.

Primary amongst my initial concerns is battery life. Sony has, since the inception of the Xperia range, boasted about “two day battery life” for practically every mobile device the Japanese company has launched. During the press briefing for the XZ, this was nowhere to be seen in the marketing material. In response to a question from a colleague, a Sony executive gave a slightly fluffy answer about the marketing material taking a “different direction”. The Sony Xperia XZ seems to marry the Z series and the X series together, which is what its name suggests, even if that wasn't the reasoning behind it. There are a few changes here and there like the Loop feature which is lovely and the inclusion of USB Type-C but overall, the XZ's design is familiar, as are many of the hardware specs. Modell: Wenn es ein Wort gibt, das Sony beschreibt, so ist dies "erstklassig" und erstklassig ist, was Consumer mit dem Sony Xperia XZ erhalten. Bereits auf den ersten Blick ist klar, dass das Xperia eine besonders hochwertige Qualität aufweist. In puncto Design behält Sony verglichen mit den oftmals scharfen Kanten seiner Vorgänger die schlanke, rechteckige Plattenform bei. Das Flaggschiff-Modell ist aus einem Industrie-Metall-Material namens ALKALEIDO, welches aus diesem Phone ein robustes und festes Gerät macht. Ein gut versteckter Fingerabdruckleser befindet sich an der Seite des Phones - ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal der meisten Flaggschiff-Smartphones und Tablets von Sony. Das XZ misst 146 x 72 x 8,1 mm und wiegt 161 g. Einhändige Nutzung ist zwar möglich, jedoch ist das schwere Gewicht belastend. Das Phone ist mit einem 5,2 Zoll großen Touchscreen mit einer Auflösung von 1.080 x 1.920 Pixeln und einer Pixeldichte von 424 PPI ausgestattet. Dieser Full-HD-Bildschirm ist wohl zweiter gegenüber dem 4K-Bildschirm des Z5 Premium. Allerdings ist das Fehlen eines 4K-Bildschirms nebensächlich, denn ein solcher ist weniger energieeffizient und für ein Smartphone wirklich nicht zweckmäßig. Das Gerät läuft unter Android OS, v6.0.1 (Marshmallow) und ein Upgrade auf v7.0 (Nougat) ist einige Monate nach seiner Markteinführung geplant.

Das Xperia XZ wird durche einen Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 Quad-Core-Chipsatz in Kombination mit 3 GB RAM angetrieben. Sein interner Speicher hat entweder eine Kapazität von 32 oder 64 GB. Zudem gibt es einen Micro-SD-Kartenleser, der eine Speichererweiterung um bis zu 256 GB ermöglicht. Allerdings ist anzumerken, dass die Dual-SIM-Version den zweiten SIM-Slot für diese Funktionalität nutzt. Seine kolossale 23-MP-Kamera an der Rückseite verfügt über eine f/2.0-Blende, Phasenerkennung und Laserautofokus. Sie unterstützt Videoaufnahmen mit 2.160p@30fps. Die 13-MP-Frontkamera nutzt eine f/2.0-Blende und unterstützt Videoaufnahmen mit Full-HD-Auflösung. Mit Gewissheit kann man sagen, dass dieses Phone aktuell in puncto Kameras zu den Spitzenreitern gehört. Selfie-Aufnahmen sind definitiv schärfer und detailreicher. Ein Schlüsselmerkmal des XZ ist seine IP68 Wasser- und Staubresistenz, welche es robuster und ideal für den Außeneinsatz macht. Allerdings wird dies schön langsam zur Voraussetzung im Flaggschiff-Markt und auch die Hauptkonkurrenten, das Samsung Galaxy S7 und S7 Edge bieten dies. Netzwerkverbindungen sind via Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, A-GPS und Bluetooth v4.2 möglich. Während das Phone kein eingebautes Radio bietet, ist es NFC-compliant. Das XZ ist in vier Farbvarianten erhältlich, nämlich mineral-black, platinum, forest-blue und deep-pink. Es verfügt über einen 2.900-mAh-Akku, was für ein Gerät dieser Größe und dieser Kategorie normal ist. Während es kein Wireless-Charging unterstützt, ist es mit einem USB-Type-C-Port ausgestattet, der schnelleres Aufladen und Datenübertragung ermöglicht. Mit dem XZ kommen Nutzer sicherlich nicht zu kurz. Zu einem erstklassigen Preis bekommen sie ein erstklassiges Gerät. Trotzdem fällt es hinter die Samsung Galaxy-S7-Serie zurück, die mehr RAM und eine etwas bessere Kamera bietet.

Serie: Sony's Xperia Z5 comes in 3 major versions, known as standard, premium and compact. The material choice is a very nice glass front and a back with metal construction wrapping all around the phone. Sony has always been recognized for having one of if not the best cameras on their phones. The Xperia Z5 features the latest sensor with 23 MP, 5520 х 4140 pixels, phase detection, autofocus, and LED flash. It is capable of video recording at 2160p@30fps, 1080p@60fps, and 720p@120fps with HDR function available. All 3 versions come with the new fingerprint sensor, which is placed at the side of the phone where the power button is. Another great design of the phone is its stereo front facing speakers. The Xperia Z5 phones are IP68 certified, i.e. dust proof and water resistant over 1.5 meter and 30 minutes.

The compact version has a 4.6 inch 720 x 1280 pixels Triluminos display. Because of its lower price it is not as big and high-resolution than the standard model. The hardware of the Android OS, v5.1.1 (Lollipop) system includes a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 consisting of 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and Cortex A43 Quad Core CPUs and an Adreno 430 GPU. The only difference of the compact model to the standard model is that it does not have 3 GB of RAM. However, due to its lower screen resolution it should have no problems with only 2 GB of RAM. The non-removable Lithium-Ion battery rated at 2700 mAh is smaller than the standard model's. Sony claims that it will last up to 2 days. In addition, this device comes with 32 GB of flash memory and the storage capacity can be expanded with a microSD by up to 200 GB.
