The newly redesigned Dell XPS 15 brings a lot of cool features to the table, but seems to miss the mark in the design department. With previous XPS notebooks being flagship models from Dell, it's disappointing to see such a bland and normal looking system. I think it's rather odd when you look at "budget" models like the Inspiron 15R and see flashier colors and sleeker profiles. Build quality was a step up at least, with metal panels protecting the screen and metal on the palmrest and keyboard trim inside the notebook. The plastic chassis felt strong, but left something to be desired when it came to accessing internal components. Users looking to replace the hard drive will find it very difficult, as the notebook requires full disassembly if they want to upgrade to an SSD later on. System performance was very good with the Intel Core i5 560M and NVIDIA GeForce GT420M performing well in a variety of tasks. The sound system was my favorite feature on this notebook, providing booming bass and great audio quality. Overall if you don't mind the looks, the XPS does offer a pretty good value, starting at $799 for the base configuration.

If the Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 420M (with Optimus technology) aren't groundbreaking enough for you, there are options for quad-core processors and a more powerful graphics card. The only thing left to do now is hand the XPS 15 the Editors' Choice in the desktop replacement laptop category.

At this point, the latest Envy 14 revision has been around for over three months. It still looks like it compares well with the new XPS, but the Radiance Infinity 900p panel is no longer an option, Waves comes standard while Beats costs extra, and Optimus trumps AMD's switchable graphics.

The ThinkPad Edge E220s is the best-looking and most comfortable small business notebook on the market. Its gorgeous soft-plastic and chrome design makes a bold statement in the boardroom or the coffee shop and its keyboard provides the best typing experience in the business. Plus, its slight frame fits comfortably in even the smallest bag. Our only issue is the E220's below-average battery life, though the approximate 5 hours of runtime will be long enough for many users. If you need more endurance, consider the $855 Toshiba Portege R835, which lasts an hour and a half longer on a charge. At $1,488, the Dell XPS 15 with Intel's second-generation Core i7 processor offers blistering performance, strong graphics, and stellar video and audio playback. If you don't plan on moving your notebook much, the larger Dell XPS 17 offers a 3D 17-inch display, the same great audio, and similar specs for the slightly lower cost of $1,474. And if you're looking for a more portable machine with longer battery life--and are willing to spend more--get the $1,799 15-inch MacBook Pro. Overall, though, those looking for a powerful 15-inch multimedia machine at a reasonable price should put the XPS 15 at or near the top of their shopping list.

Dell: Dell ist ein US-amerikanischer Hersteller (Sitz Texas) von Computer-Hardware  und gehört zu den grössten internationalen Herstellern sowohl in Bezug auf Marktanteile als auch hinsichtlich Notebook-Modellen, die im deutsch- und englisch-sprachigen Raum getestet wurden. Dell ist nach Angaben des Marktforschers IDC (Q2 2008) mit 16,4 % Marktanteil der weltweit zweitgrößte Hersteller von Personal Computern (HP 18,9 %, Acer 9,9 %, Lenovo 7,5 %). In Deutschland liegt Dell mit einem Marktanteil von 13,2 % derzeit auf Platz drei. Dell erzielte 2007 einen Umsatz von 61 Milliarden US-Dollar und beschäftigt etwa 80.000 Mitarbeiter weltweit. Die Produktpalette umfasst unter anderem PCs, Notebooks, Speichersysteme, Monitore, Server, Drucker sowie Unterhaltungselektronik. Dell vertreibt seine Produkte vorwiegend direkt. Diese Grafikkarten sollten alle modernen Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Anspruchsvolle Spiele müssen jedoch in mittlerer Detailstufe gespielt werden. Ältere und weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele wie die Sims Serie können auch in hohen Detailsstufen flüssig dargestellt werden.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M: Auf den GF108 Kern basierende DX11 Mittelklassegrafikkarte.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M: Mittelklasse Grafikkarte basierend auf dem GT 435M Chip (GF108) jedoch mit minimal höheren Taktraten und Unterstützung für GDDR5 und DDR3 mit 900 MHz.

Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

460M: Schneller Mittelklasse Doppelkernprozessor mit HyperThreading (4 Threads gleichzeitig abarbeitbar) aber ohne AES Funktionen.

2410M: Auf Sandy Brige Architektur basierender Doppelkernprozessor mit 2.3 GHz (Turbo 2.6-2.9 GHz) mit integrierter Grafikkarte (650-1200MHz) und integriertem DDR3 Speicherkontroller.

840QM: Der Core i7-840QM ist ein High-End Quad Core Prozessor für Notebooks und taktet dank Turbo Modus automatisch zwischen 1.86-3.2 GHz. Ausserdem unterstützt er Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads.

740QM: Der Core i7-740QM positioniert sich knapp unter dem 820QM bietet jedoch eine gerinigere max. Turbo Boost Frequenz von 2.93 GHz. Die CPU unterstützt Hyperthreading zur gleichzeitigen Abarbeitung von 8 Threads. Im Vergleich zu den stärkeren Core i7 bietet er außerdem nur 6MB L3 Cache.

Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Gewicht ist für Notebooks durchschnittlich. Daher passt vor allem die breite Masse der Laptops mit 15 Zoll Display in diese Gewichtsklasse.

81.28%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
