Asus UX Serie
Mit den neu vorgestellten Ultrabooks UX21 und UX31, die vom taiwanischen Hersteller Asus selbst unter dem Begriff Zenbook vermarktet werden, rückt die schon länger bestehende UX-Serie wieder in den Vordergrund. Schon im Jahr 2009 gab es mit dem UX50V ein schlankes Notebook mit stromsparender Hardware von Asus, das allerdings mit einem 15-Zoll-Display ausgestattet war. Heute, rund drei Jahre nach dem ersten Geräte dieser Serie, präsentiert unteranderem Asus zwei Geräte einer neuen Klasse mit 11,6- und 13,3-Zoll-Display. Die Kategorie Ultrabook selbst wurden von Intel lanciert und soll dem bisherigen Platzhirschen von Apple (MacBook Air 11 und MacBook Air 13) einheizen.
Wichtige Eckpunkte für dieses Vorhaben sind ein schlankes Design, flinke und gleichzeitig stromsparende Hardware und passable Akkulaufzeiten. Asus nutzt dafür ein Chassis aus Aluminium, ein SSD-Speichermedium sowie einen Lithium-Polymer-Akku, der allerdings fest integriert ist. In den ersten Testberichten zu den zwei neuen Geräten werden die Eingabemöglichkeiten, eine helle Bildschirmbeleuchtung und die Geräuschkulisse im Idle-Zustand positiv hervorgehoben. Weniger gefallen die spiegelnde Oberfläche des Displays und die fehlende Erweiterbarkeit der Komponenten.
Asus bietet das Zenbook UX21 (11,6 Zoll) und das größere UX31 mit 13,3-Zoll-Bildschirm in Deutschland ab 999 Euro (UVP) an. Im Blick auf die anderen Geräte fällt auf, dass Asus bisher nur Premium-Geräte im Angebot hat, die sich in der Preisregion von Apple bewegen. Acer bietet das eigene Aspire S3 bereits ab 799 Euro (UVP) an. Im Vergleich schneiden die Geräte von Asus in diversen Testberichten aber besser ab.

Given the lack of any Intel-specific Ultrabook software I'm hesitant to even call this thing an Ultrabook. There's also the fact that, at least in the case of Intel Rapid Start Technology, being more of an Ultrabook in that sense would've been a step back in performance. In fact, I see no real reason to use that brand at all—which is likely why ASUS ended up calling it a Zenbook to begin with.

We like the Asus Zenbook UX31 quite a bit. It's exquisitely thin, superbly light at 2.86 pounds, and it's gorgeous. The build quality is top notch--in fact it's one of the best made notebooks we've seen outside of Apple's store. The laptop is very fast and could work as a main machine if you're not a 3D gamer. For a 13" ultraportable it has a better than average selection of ports, and we love the HDMI and USB 3.0 ports in particular. Though most components are soldered onto the motherboard, we appreciate that it's not hard to open up the notebook to access components. We have no qualms with the keyboard though it's not our favorite, and we actually like the trackpad after updating the firmware and drivers. Lastly, the 1600 x 900 display really sets the Zenbook apart from the crowd and is more conducive to doing serious work on the go. Finally, there's a MacBook Air for Windows folks. That's not to say the Air isn't an excellent machine to run Windows, but the $200 price savings, Windows keyboard, HDMI and USB 3.0 combined with the higher resolution display are a good counter to the Air.

The Zenbook will only appeal to those that want a Windows ultraportable that looks like a MacBook Air and are willing to put up with the Zenbook's flaws to get one. While it's possible Ultrabooks from other manufacturers will do a better job, it'll be tough as the MacBook Air isn't just a collection of components but a result of tight integration between hardware and software. The keyboard requires extra pressure; the keys must be 100% pressed otherwise keystrokes do not register. I mastered this after a few days. The Touchpad needed a driver update before it became predictable, and even then it is not particularly accurate. I also wish the clicks were quieter. Other things to consider with this notebook are the lack of user-upgradeable parts (there are none) and scarcity of ports (that can be solved with adapters, however).

Used in combination with anti-theft software provided by companies such as McAfee, this hardware communicates with an Intel security server and is able to shut down and remotely lock the notebook if it's stolen. But while anti-theft technology is part of the Ultrabook spec, it's a premium service that's purchased through the notebook retailer, not Intel or ASUS.

We’re inclined to affirm that we do believe in love at first sight. But since that initial look was of the laptop that launched this copy, our heart does stay with the MacBook Air. Make no mistake though, the Asus UX21E Zenbook is the best copy of any Apple portable we’ve seen to date, with fantastic all-metal build and signs of the kind of attention to detail that’s rarely seen outside the Mac maker’s design labs.

On the other hand, it's easy to imagine a better value proposition, particularly with both the Toshiba Z835-P330 and HP Folio 13 offering more spacious 13.3-inch screens; more comfortable, backlit keyboards; and lower prices with virtually equal portability (okay, you might notice the HP Folio 13's additional pound in your briefcase, but you'll never notice the Toshiba's additional four ounces). The Asus UX31-RSL8, too, gives you a lot more than the UX21E-DH52 for only $50 extra. For now, consider the UX21E-DH52 as a status symbol—about as small and as stylish as laptops get.

Business users who are considering investing in an ultrabook should be advised that the Zenbook also ships without enterprise friendly features including Intel's Core vPro technology, a Trusted Platform Module chip and fingerprint scanner. All are included in the Toshiba Portégé Z830 ultrabook together with Windows 7 Professional as standard. The Portégé is better suited to the needs of business users even though it is £300 pricier at £1,155.

Einige nicht anspruchsvolle aktuelle Spiele können mit geringen Details noch flüssig gespielt werden. Für Office und Video natürlich ausreichende Leistungsreserven.
NVIDIA GeForce G 105M: Höhergetaktete 9300M GS und dadurch auch etwas schneller. Weiterhin in 65nm gefertigt. Unterstützt Hybrid-SLI mit HybridPower und GeForceBoost.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: In Sandy Bridge Prozessoren (Core ix-2xxx) integrierte Grafikkarte von Intel. Stärkere GT2 genannte Version mit 12 Execution Units (EUs). Je nach Modell mit unterschiedlichen Taktraten (350-650MHz) und TurboBoost Unterstützung (900-1350MHz).
Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge): In den Celeron und Pentium Sandy Bridge (2. Generation Core) integrierte Prozessorgrafik. Technisch eine Intel HD Graphics 2000 (in Desktop CPUs) mit geringeren Taktraten. Die namensgleiche HD Graphics der Arrandale Prozessoren ist nicht baugleich!

13.0: 13 Zoll ist ein häufiges, jedenfalls aber das grösste Displayformat für Subnotebooks. Der Vorteil von Subnotebooks liegt darin, dass das Notebook klein dimensioniert sein kann und daher leicht tragbar ist. Das verhältnismäßig kleine Display hat noch den Vorteil wenig Strom zu benötigen, was die Akkulaufzeit und damit die Mobilität weiter verbessert. Der Nachteil ist, dass das Lesen von Texten ein wenig anstrengend für die Augen ist. Sehr hohe Auflösungen sind nur bedingt nutzbar. Nicht fehlsichtige Menschen sollten mit dieser Displaygröße aber zurechtkommen können.

Notebook-Displays im 15 Zoll-Format sind der Standard schlechthin. 15.4 Zoll ist meist die genaue Größeneinheit für 16:10 Notebooks, während 15.6 Zoll ein Indiz für das Format 16:9 sind. Der Grund der Beliebtheit mittelgrosser Displays ist, dass diese Größe einigermaßen augenschonend ist und dennoch nicht allzu viel Strom verbraucht und die Geräte noch halbwegs kompakt sein können.

Dieses Subnotebook/Netbook/UMPC, sofern man es als solches überhaupt bezeichnen kann, gehört zu den leichtesten Notebooks überhaupt und kann klarerweise hervorragend getragen werden. Es gibt kaum Sub-Notebooks, aber ein paar Netbooks in dieser extremen Gewichtsklasse. 7-9 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
2.6 kg:
Dieses Notebook ist etwas leichter als der Durchschnitt aller Notebooks. Für Subnotebooks ist das bereits zu schwer. 14 Zoll Displays passen in diesen Gewichtsbereich.
80.1%: Diese Bewertung muss man eigentlich als durchschnittlich ansehen, denn es gibt etwa ebenso viele Notebooks mit besseren Beurteilungen wie Schlechteren. Die Verbalbeurteilungen klingen aber oft besser als sie wirklich sind, denn richtig gelästert wird über Notebooks eher selten. Obwohl dieser Bereich offiziell meist einem "Befriedigen" entspricht, passt oft eher "mäßiger Durchschnitt".
