Test MSI Radeon RX 470 Gaming X 4 GB

Abgespeckte RX 480 Die neue Polaris-Architektur von AMD feierte vor gut zwei Monaten mit dem Topmodell Radeon RX 480 ihr Debüt. Nun folgt mit der Radeon RX 470 der kleinere Ableger. Unser Test soll verdeutlichen, wo die Karte leistungstechnisch einzuordnen ist.

Laut AMD ist die breite Masse der Gamer nicht gewillt mehr als 300 USD für eine neue Grafikkarte auszugeben. Und genau hier setzt AMD mit ihren Grafikkarten basierend auf 3D-Transistoren (14 nm FinFET bei Global Foundries) an. Nach dem Start der Radeon RX 480 basierend auf dem Polaris 10 Chip folgt nun die Radeon RX 470, welche auch mit einem Polaris 10 Chip ausgestattet ist. Allerdings drosselt AMD die Leistung etwas, sodass die Radeon RX 470 nun auf 2048 Shader kommt. An der Taktfrequenz der GPU wurde ebenfalls geschraubt. Somit taktet AMD die Grafikkarte mit 926 MHz. Die TDP sinkt im Vergleich zur Radeon RX 480 um 30 Watt auf nunmehr 120 Watt und würde sich theoretisch auch für Notebooks eignen.

Polaris

Polaris ist AMDs erste Architektur die im 14 nm FinFET Verfahren gefertigt wird. Es ist die 4. Generation der GCN (Graphics Core Next) Architektur und bietet folgende Verbesserungen laut AMD:

  • Verbesserte Geometrieverarbeitung
  • Verbesserte Shader Effizienz (bis zu 15% pro CU bei RX 480 vs. R9 290)
  • LiquidVR API Unterstützung mit "Variable Resolution Rendering"
  • Verbesserter Speicherkontroller und Delta Color Compression (DCC) mit voller 2/4/8:1 Unterstützung
  • Verdoppelter Level 2 Cache
  • Shader Instruction Pre-Fetch und verbessertes Buffering
  • Verbessertes Async Compute
  • AMD TrueAudio Next (per Shader berechnet)
  • H.265 Main 10 Decode und 4K60 HEVC Encode
  • HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.3 HBR (5K60 mit einem einzelnen Kabel) / 1.4 HDR mit HDCP 2,2
  • HDR Display Unterstützung

Diese Verbesserungen sollen zu einer bis zu 2,8x verbesserten Performance pro Watt führen (RX 470 vs R9 270X).

Unser Testsystem für die folgenden Benchmarks setzt sich aus folgenden Komponenten zusammen:

Intel Core i7-4790K (unübertaktet), 16 GB DDR3, Asus ZU97-Deluxe, Asus PB287Q 4K Monitor, Intel SSD 530 (240 GB, System), OCZ Trion 100 SSD (480 GB, Benchmarks), Windows 10 64 Bit mit allen Updates Mitte Juni. Als Treiber verwendeten wir den Vorabtreiber 16.8.1 der für die Presse vor Launch zur Verfügung gestellt wurde.

Synthetische Benchmarks

Beginnen wir unsere Performance-Betrachtung zunächst mit einem Blick auf die synthetischen Benchmarks von Futuremark und Unigine. Je nach Test ordnet sich die Radeon RX 470 hier zwischen 1 und 10 Prozent hinter der Radeon RX 480 ein und ist dem größeren Schwestermodell somit näher auf den Fersen, als es die technischen Daten vermuten lassen. Dies dürfte zum einen auf den leichten Mehrtakt unseres RX 470 Custom-Modells zurückzuführen sein, zum anderen konnte die Polaris-Architektur seit dem Launch der RX 480 aber auch durch neuere Treiber zulegen. Prinzipiell sehen wir die Differenz zwischen beiden Ablegern eher im zweistelligen Prozentbereich.

Im Konkurrenzvergleich kann sich die RX 470 mit der beliebten Maxwell-Karte GeForce GTX 970 messen und diese vor allem im 3DMark 11 klar hinter sich lassen. Unigine Heaven und Valley liegen dagegen eher dem Nvidia-Modell, sodass es insgesamt auf einen Leistungsgleichstand hinausläuft. Die aktuelle GeForce GTX 1060 platziert sich 16 Prozent vor der RX 470, tritt jedoch auch zu einem merklich höheren Preispunkt an.

Spiele-Benchmarks

In unseren Spiele-Benchmarks muss die RX 470 gegenüber der Nvidia-Konkurrenz etwas zurückstecken, schlägt sich jedoch auch hier äußerst beachtlich für ihre Preisklasse. Unser taktgesteigertes MSI-Modell ordnet sich nur knapp hinter der älteren, deutlich energiehungrigeren Radeon R9 290X sowie der GeForce GTX 970 ein und fällt gegenüber der Referenzversion der RX 480 weniger als 10 Prozent zurück. Das reicht, um praktisch alle aktuellen Spiele des Jahres 2016 in FullHD-Auflösung und höchsten Details flüssig auf den Bildschirm zu zaubern – einige Titel wie Dirt Rally können Anwender sogar in WQHD (2.560 x 1.440 Pixel) oder UHD (3.840 x 2.160 Pixel) zocken. Generell bleibt jedoch festzuhalten, dass Besitzer solch hochauflösenderer Monitore bei AMD besser auf die kommende High-End-Serie "Vega" warten sollten, sofern stets die maximalen Einstellungen aktiviert werden sollen.

Die kaum schnellere RX 480 hat mit den RX-470-Modellen ab knapp über 200 Euro eine starke hausinterne Konkurrenz bekommen – vor allem dann, wenn man sich mit der derzeit fast immer ausreichenden 4-GB-Variante zufrieden gibt.

Bei den modernen Boost und Turbo-Verfahren ist es natürlich sehr wichtig wie lange die Grafikkarte die Performance halten kann. Gerade bei Spielen sind lange Belastungen über Stunden keine Seltenheit. Bei der Radeon RX 470 von MSI sieht es jedoch diesbezüglich sehr gut aus. In unserem Test mit "The Witcher 3" in 1920x1080 und ultra Settings bleibt die Taktrate konstant bei 1242 MHz. Die GPU Temperatur pendelte sich bei unkritischen 66 Grad Celsius ein.  

Auch im 3DMark Time Spy Stress Test (20 Durchläufe) verringerte sich die Leistung nur um 0,2 %. Auch im Furmark Stresstest bleibt die Taktrate bei konstant 1242 MHz (und 72°C Kerntemperatur).

Compute Performance

Die Radeon RX 480 verfügt über 32 Compute Units die für generelle Berechnungen eingesetzt werden können. Hierfür propagiert AMD das offene OpenCL Protokoll, aber auch DirectCompute wird unterstützt. Im Test mit LuxMark (OpenCL) und ComputeMark (DirectCompute) zeigt die Grafikkarte eine durchaus ansprechende Performance auf Augenhöhe der GTX 970 und GTX 1060. Die Referenz-RX-480 ist 9% schneller.

Videoengine

Die RX 470 enthält die selbe Videoengine wie der RX 480, welche im Test problemlos ein H.264 4K Video mit 100 MBit mit 84 fps und 3 % CPU Last wiedergeben konnte. Auch H.265 war in 4K kein Problem (siehe RX 480 Test). Mit einer PlayReady 3.0 (SL3000) Zertifizierung wie die GTX 1080 bereits hat, kann die RX 480 noch nicht aufwarten. Laut AMD soll dies jedoch in Zukunft möglich sein.

Stromverbrauch

Wie auch die RX 480, kann die RX 470 beim Idle Stromverbrauch nicht sonderlich punkten. Die neuen GTX 10 Grafikkarten und auch die Polaris 10 basierende RX 460 sind deutlich sparsamer.

Unter Last ist die RX 470 etwas sparsamer als die GeForce GTX 970 von MSI. Die GTX 1070 braucht bei deutlich höherer Leistung jedoch ähnlich viel Strom.

Lautstärke

Wie schon die GTX 1070 Gaming Z überzeugt auch die Gaming X Version der RX 470 durch einen ausgesprochen leisen Betrieb. Selbst bei 72°C Kerntemperatur während dem Furmark Stresstest drehen die Lüfter nur mit 1120 RPM im Schnitt und bleiben in unserem Testsystem leiser als der be-quiet Prozessorlüfter. Transistorpfeifen ist uns nur bei sehr hohen FPS Raten leicht aufgefallen (3DMark Cloud Gate z.B.) und war nicht störend.

Ohne Last schalten sich die beiden großen Lüfter zwar leider nicht ab, bleiben mit 876 RPM jedoch sehr leise und kühlen die GPU auf 46°C.

Hitzeentwicklung

Im Test erhitzt sich die RX 470 auf der Rückseite deutlich. Wir messen maximal 87°C und damit deutlich mehr als bei der Referenz RX 480 (72 °C). Die Vorderseite mit den großen Lüftern bleibt jedoch relativ kühl. Nur die beiden Heatpipes auf der Seite erhitzen sich auch klarerweise deutlich. Wir messen mit angebrachtem Klebeband (aufgrund der Reflektivität) 48°C. 

Im Internen der Grafikkarte melden die Sensoren maximal 66 °C bei starker Last (The Witcher 3 z.B.) - absolut unkritisch. Im Furmark erreicht die MSI RX 470 das von uns gemessene Maximum von 72°C bei weiterhin 1242 MHz (kein Throttling).

Fazit

Die MSI RX 470 Gaming X 4G gefällt im Test durch eine ansprechende Performance die im Spieleschnitt nur etwa 6 % hinter der Referenz-RX-480 liegt. Durch die konstant anliegenden 1242 MHz ist sie dadurch etwa 4% schneller als eine Referenz RX 470 (3620 Time Spy Punkte laut AMD). Dadurch eignet sie sich am besten für Full HD Spiele in maximaler Auflösung. Nur bei XCOM 2 müsste man bei unseren Tests die Qualität etwas reduzieren. Wie von den MSI Gaming X Karten gewohnt, ist das Kühlsystem leise und effizient. Preise wurden bis jetzt leider noch keine Veröffentlicht, die genannten Listenpreise sind derzeit jedoch etwas zu nahe an der 4 GB Version der RX 480. Hier muss man die Straßenpreise abwarten.

Wie bei der Radeon RX 480, erhält man auch bei der RX 470 die selben Features wie HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 für 5K Displays, HDR Support und eine verbesserte Videoengine.

Noch gibt es von Nvidia keine direkte Konkurrenz, die GTX 1060 ist deutlich teurer und auch schneller. Wir sind gespannt wie das Duell mit einer kommenden GTX 1050 (Ti?) aussehen wird.
