Test NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (Desktop) - Pascal ist da

Die GTX1080 ist eine High-End Desktop- und Notebook-Grafikkarte welche im Mai 2016 vorgestellt wurde und auf der neuen Pascal Architektur basiert. Für unseren Test stand uns die Founders Edition Desktop Grafikkarte von Nvidia zur Verfügung, welche wir auf Herz und Nieren getestet haben.

Mit der GeForce GTX 1080 bringt Nvidia die Pascal Architektur und 16nm FinFet in das Consumer Segment. Die neue Architektur verspricht deutliche Effizienzgewinne und einige neue Features. Diese betrachten wir in unserem Artikel über die Pascal Architektur hier im Detail. In diesem Artikel widmen wir uns den Features und der Leistung der Desktop und Notebook GeForce GTX 1080 basierend auf den GP104, im speziellen der Founders Edition von Nvidia. Diese Variante wird direkt von Nvidia designed und gebaut und löst das alte "Referenzdesign" ab. Im Vergleich zu diesem, ist die Founders Edition jedoch als höherwertige Ausgabe zu sehen und liegt mit 699 Dollar (ohne Steuern, 789 Euro inkl Steuern in Deutschland) deutlich über den günstigsten 1080 Karten die laut Nvidia ab 599 Dollar (ohne Steuern, etwa 680 Euro hochgerechnet) erhältlich sein werden.

Die Founders Edition setzt auf hochwertige Materialien, eine Vapor-Chamber-Kühlung und ein hochwertiges PCB. Sie wird mit einem einzelnen 8-Pin Stromstecker ausgeliefert und bietet drei DisplayPort 1.4 ("ready") Ports, einen HDMI 2,0b und einen Dual-Link DVI Anschluss. Mit 8 GB GDDR5X Grafikspeicher ist nach heutigen Maßstäben auch ausreichen RAM verbaut.

Unser Testsystem für folgende Benchmarks ist ein Intel Core i7-4790K (unübertaktet) auf einem Asus Z97-Deluxe Mainboard, 16 GB DDR3-2133, Samsung SSD 840 Pro und OCZ Trion 100 bzw. HGST 1 TB HDD.

Die Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 ist nach dem Topmodell Titan X die zweitschnellste Pascal-Grafikkarte für Desktop-PCs und wurde im Mai 2016 vorgestellt. Die GPU verfügt über die vollen 2.560 Shadereinheiten des zugrundeliegenden GP104-Chips sowie 8 GB GDDR5X-Speicher an einem 256-Bit-Interface (10 GHz, 320 GB/s).

Features

Der GP104-Chip wird in einem 16nm-FinFET-Prozess bei TSMC gefertigt und bietet eine Reihe neuer Features, unter anderem Support für DisplayPort 1.4 (ready), HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) sowie verbessertes H.265 Video De- und Encoding (PlayReady 3.0). Performance

Die Performance der GeForce GTX 1080 liegt etwa 65 Prozent über dem Vorgänger GTX 980 sowie 30 Prozent oberhalb der GTX 980 TI und Titan X (Maxwell). Damit ordnet sich die GTX 1080 im absoluten High-End-Segment ein und kann die meisten Spiele des Jahres 2016 in hohen Einstellungen und 4K-Auflösung flüssig darstellen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der GeForce GTX 1080 wird vom Hersteller mit 180 Watt beziffert und liegt damit nur leicht über dem Vorgänger GTX 980 (165 Watt).

Synthetische Benchmarks

Bei den synthetischen Benchmarks setzen wir hauptsächlich auf die beliebte 3DMark Serie von Futuremark. Hier bleibt die neue GTX 1080 knapp hinter den zwei GTX 980 im SLI Modus, die im MSI GT80S 6QF verbaut sind. SLI skaliert bei den 2013er Tests sehr gut, im älteren 3DMark 11 ist der SLI-Verbund etwa auf einem Level mit der GTX1080. Im Unigine Heaven 4,0 bleibt kann sich die 1080 jedoch an die Spitze setzen. Durch alle GPU Tests gerechnet bleibt ein Vorsprung der 980SLI von 6 %.

Eine einzelne GTX 980 wird von der Pascal basierenden GTX 1080 natürlich klar abgehängt. mit etwa 40 % Rückstand positioniert sich z.B. das Schenker XMG U716. Auch im Heaven bleibt dieser Vorsprung bestehen. Die Radeon R9 Fury (Desktop) ist etwas schneller als die GTX 980, bleibt mit 33% jedoch auch klar hinter der neuen Pascal Karte.

Spiele-Benchmarks

GTX 1080 - besonders für VR gut geeignet

Viel interessanter ist natürlich die Leistung in tatsächlichen Spielen und 4K Auflösung bei hohen Details. Durch die nicht immer gut funktionierende SLI Skalierung, bleibt die GeForce GTX 980 SLI im MSI GT80S 6QF im Schnitt 14% hinter der neuen GTX 1080. Die einzelne GTX 980 bleibt 41% zurück, die R9 Fury positioniert sich mit 31% Rückstand leicht besser, aber kommt der GTX 1080 immer noch nicht nahe. Die mobile GeForce GTX 980M ist mit 57% Rückstand deutlich zurück. Alle getesteten Spiele waren in diesen Einstellungen flüssig spielbar.

4K und maximale Details?

Nach den vielversprechenden Benchmarks in 4k und hoher Detailstufe, stellte sich natürlich die Frage ob die GTX 1080 als schnellste Single-Chip-Karte in der Lage ist aktuelle PC Spiele auch in maximaler Detailstufe, Anti-Aliasing und 3840x2160 flüssig darzustellen. Bei Need for Speed 2016 (46 fps), The Division (39 fps), Star Wars Battlefront (61 fps), Black Ops 3 (51 fps), Far Cry Primal (42 fps), Rise of The Tomb Raider (37 fps), Dirt Rally (61 fps), Doom (ultra 51 fps) und Battlefield 4 (58 fps) war dies der Fall. Nur Anno 2205 (24 fps) und Crysis 3 (31 fps) waren knapp an der Grenze. Insgesamt reicht die Leistung bei sehr anspruchsvollen Spielen also noch nicht um Ruckler in anspruchsvollen Szenen zu vermeiden. Mit leichten Reduktionen bei AA oder Details ist aber der 4K Spielspaß ohne Einschränkungen möglich.

Boost-Takt und Leistung unter Last

Dank GPU Boost 3.0 kann die Grafikkarte bis zum internen Temperaturlimit deutlich höher takten. Im Test mit The Witcher 3 startet die Founders Edition mit hohen 1.797 MHz und 142 fps. Nach 5 Minuten liegen dann nur noch 1.696 MHz an (1.607 MHz laut Nvidia Basistakt). Die GPU bleibt konstant bei 82°C und die Framerate sank auf 134 fps (-6%) ab. Der Speichertakt blieb jedoch konstant bei 5005 MHz (effektiv 10.010 MHz). Auch bei Metro Last Light konnten wir einen leichten Performanceabfall über Zeit beobachten. Von anfänglich 141 fps (FHD ultra) ging es zurück auf 138 fps im dritten Durchgang (-4%). Danach pendelt es sich jedoch auf 139 fps ein (10 Durchgänge getestet).

Dadurch muss man je nach Anwendung wohl mit maximal 6% Leistungsabfall rechnen. 

DirectX 12

Als neue Wunderwaffe (vor allem von AMD) beschworen, sind nun endlich die ersten Spiele mit DirectX 12 Unterstützung heraussen. Bei Nvidia zeigt sich jedoch das der DirectX 11 Treiber bereits hervoragend optimiert ist. Meistens bringt der Einsatz von DirectX 11 sogar einen leichten Geschwindigkeitsvorteil. Ashes of Singularity war je nach Durchlauf mal leicht schneller, mal leicht langsamer bei "crazy" Settings und 4K - immer rund um 41 fps. Bei Rise of the Tomb Raider konnten wir wieder einen minimalen Geschwindigkeitsvorsprung für DX11 messen. Hitman hatte mit dem Testtreiber 368.13 noch Grafikfehler bei DX12, wodurch wir auf einen Vergleich verzichten (Nvidia arbeitet nach eigenen Aussagen an der Behebung bis zum Launch). Das theoretische Potential von DirectX 12 zeigt jedoch der Overhead Test vom 3DMark 2013. Ein 11-faches Ergebnis spricht hier für sich.

Compute-Performance

Im LuxMark Rendertest kann die 1080 sich nicht gegen die zwei GTX 980 durchsetzen. Zu perfekt skalieren beide GPUs in diesem Anwendungsszenario. Die R9 Fury und einzelne GTX 980 können aber deutlich abgehängt werden. Der ComputeMark konnte anscheinend nicht beide GTX 980 nutzen. Dadurch kann sich die 1080 hier im Gesamtscore um beachtliche 73 bzw 79% absetzen. Auch die R9 Fury ist 25% langsamer, kann aber im Fluid 3DTex Test die Spitzenposition einnehmen.

Professionelle Anwendungen

Verlockend ist der Einsatz einer Consumer GPU für professionelle Applikationen. Die Preisunterschiede zu den Quadro Karten ist oft sehr hoch, jedoch sind die GeForce Treiber nicht zertifiziert und teilweise auch deutlich beschnitten. Je nach Treiberversion (besonder bei Notebooks) fluktuiert die Performance auch deutlich. Wir haben hier eine "gute" GTX 980 im Schenker XMG U716 und eine "schlechte" im GT72S herausgenommen, welche z.B. in Maya sich deutlich unterscheiden. Beide Karten bieten in DirectX zwar eine ähnliche Performance, die unterschiedlichen Treiberversionen führen hier jedoch zu diesen deutlichen Unterschieden. Die 980 SLI konnte übrigens keinen Vorteil zur einzelnen 980er ausspielen. Die professionellen M5000M und selbst M3000M können sich bei manchen Tests wie Siemens NX deutlich absetzen. Und dies trotz schwächerer Hardware. Insgesamt zeigt die GTX 1080 mit dem von uns getestetem 368.13 Treiber jedoch eine gute Performance.

Im Test konnte der neue Videodekoder auch überzeugen. Sowohl 2K H.264 als auch 4K H.264 wurden mit geringer Last und hohen Frameraten (4K 100 Mbits 138 fps, 4% CPU) wiedergegeben. Auch HEVC war kein Problem (1080p mit 565 fps, 4% CPU und 4k 267 fps bei 1% CPU).

Dank 12-Bit HEVC Decoding und neuer Security Features ist die GTX 1080 als eine der ersten Karten PlayReady 3.0 (SL3000) zertifiziert und eignet sich daher für 4K Streaming (z.B. Netflix) unter Windows 10. Bezüglich der Features des Videode- und encoders in Pascal verweisen wir auf unseren ausführlichen Artikel zu Pascal.

Emissionen der Founders Edition

Bei den Emissionen hält sich die Founders Edition der Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 angenehm zurück. Idle am Desktop können wir aus 15 cm kaum einen Unterschied zur Geräuschkulisse des (wohlgemerkt relativ lauten) CPU Lüfters feststellen. Mit und ohne Grafikkarte messen wir etwa 41 dB (für Netzteil und CPU Lüfter), wie man an der Kurve in unterem Diagramm erkennt, dreht der CPU Lüfter sogar minimal höher in manchen Bereichen mit aktivier integrierter GPU. Unter Last erhöht sich die Geräuschkulisse auf bis zu 49.4 dB (2335 RPM) in Furmark bzw 48.5 dB (2200 RPM) in The Witcher 3 bei längerer Last. Die Geräuschcharakteristik bleibt jedoch angenehm und war nie störend.

Aufgefallen ist uns jedoch ein störendes Spulenfiepen bei Frameraten über 200 fps. Besonders in Bereichen über 400 fps wird es etwas unangenehm, jedoch ist dies nur für wenige Nutzer ein Problem. 

Beim Stromverbrauch braucht unser Testsystem ohne dedizierte Grafikkarte 66 Watt (Desktop Windows 10, einzelner 4K Monitor per DisplayPort verbunden). Mit der GTX 1080 im Idle erhöht sich der Wert um 8 Watt auf 74 Watt. HWInfo meldet von den Sensoren hier passende 8,8 Watt für die GTX1080. Mit einer AMD Radeon R9 Fury (XFX) sind es im Vergleich 85 Watt (HWInfo kann hier keine Werte auslesen). Eine Asus Strix GTX 980Ti benötigte 86 Watt. Ein beachtliches Ergebnis für die GTX 1080, die 980 (Ti) sind je nach Test meist 3-8 Watt sparsamer als die R9 Fury, wodurch die GTX 1080 auch hier als Sieger hervorgehen sollte.

Unter Last (The Witcher 3) messen wir anfangs 322 Watt an der Steckdose (also 248 Watt mehr als im Idle Zustand). HWInfo meldet für die GPU 175 Watt. Nach 5 Minuten pendelt sich der Wert auf 302 Watt ein (HWInfo meldet 160 Watt für die GPU, 34 Watt für die CPU). Das empfohlene 500 Watt Netzteil sollte also ausreichen. Die XFX Radeon R9 Fury Pro pendelt hier konstant rund um 350 Watt im Testsystem. Die Asus Strix 980 Ti (werksseitig übertaktet) braucht mit 397 Watt noch etwas mehr.

Fazit zur Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition

Nach unseren zahlreichen Benchmarks und Messungen kann man mit ruhigem Gewissen Nvidia zu Pascal gratulieren. Die Grafikkarte macht bei ähnlichem Stromverbrauch einen deutlichen Sprung in der Performance. Selbst zwei GTX 980 im SLI Modus können im Spieledurchschnitt leicht abgehängt werden. Die Desktop 980Ti und Titan X bleiben dadurch ebenfalls zurück. Spielen in 4K wird dadurch mit einer einzelnen GTX 1080 meistens in höchsten Grafiksettings möglich. Wie bei der GTX 980 ist ein zukünftiger Einsatz im Notebook wahrscheinlich nur eine Frage der Zeit.

Die hochwertige Founders Edition von Nvidia gefällt mit angenehmer Lautstärke und hochwertigen Materialien. Ob sie sich gegen die Modelle der Dritthersteller durchsetzen kann, wird erst die Zukunft weisen.
