Mit der AMD Radeon VII bietet AMD erstmals eine Desktop-GPU an, welche in 7 nm gefertigt wird. Ob dieser Schritt sich bezahlt gemacht hat und ob die 16 GB HBM2-VRAM ausreichen, um Nvidia unter Druck zu setzen, erfahren Sie in diesem Review.

Zur CES dieses Jahrs präsentierte AMD mit der Radeon VII eine neue Desktop-GPU für den High-End-Bereich. Die auf der Vega-Architektur basierende GPU wird erstmalig im 7-nm-Verfahren gefertigt und ist mit 16 GB VRAM zukunftssicher aufgestellt. Im Vergleich dazu bietet Nvidia mit seinem Topmodell (GeForce RTX 2080 Ti) nur 11 GB VRAM.

Die kleine Strukturbreite soll die Performance pro Watt deutlich verbessern. Auf 331 mm² vereint AMD beim Vega-20-Chip ca. 13,2 Mrd. Transistoren. Insgesamt bietet die Radeon VII 3.840 Shadereinheiten und ein Speicherinterface von 4.096 Bit.

Um die 300-Watt-Leistungsaufnahme auch unter Last im Zaum zu halten, hat sich AMD für ein neues Kühlkonzept entschieden. Die Vapor-Chamber-Heatpipes und die Alufinnen werden mittels drei Axiallüftern gekühlt. Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger lieferte AMD das Referenzdesign mit einem Radiallüfter aus. Es lässt sich darüber streiten, ob dies nun effektiver ist, denn ohne Optimierungen drehen die drei Lüfter unter Last ordentlich auf.

Auf der externen Anschlussseite finden wir dreimal DisplayPort und einmal HDMI. Intern verlangt die Grafikkarte nach zwei 8-Pin-Stromanschlüssen.

Das Testsystem - Ryzen 7 2700X und X470 als Basis

Als Testsystem dient eine aktuelle AMD-Plattform auf Basis des Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 WiFi. Die CPU, ein AMD RYZEN 7 2700X, bietet eine gute Leistung und als Kühlung für den Prozessor nutzen wir eine AIO (Be Quiet Silent Loop 280mm). Der 16-GB-Arbeitsspeicher stammt von G-Skill und taktet mit 3.400 MHz. Der Acer Predator XB321HK schränkt uns aufgrund der UHD-Tauglichkeit nicht ein. Ein großer Dank geht an dieser Stelle an AMD für die Bereitstellung der Testplattform.

Die AMD Radeon VII ist eine High-End-Desktop-Grafikkarte, die im Januar 2019 vorgestellt wurde und auf der Vega-Architektur basiert (Vega-20-Chip). Sie ist das Topmodell der AMD-Desktop-Grafikkarten und bietet 60 CUs mit 1.400 – 1.750 MHz (Boost) Taktfrequenz und 16 GB HBM2-Grafikspeicher. Dieser ist mit 4.096 Bit angebunden, woraus eine Speicherbandbreite von 1.024 GB/s resultiert.

Features

Der Vega-20-Grafikchip wird erstmals im 7-nm-Verfahren gefertigt. Dadurch ist der Die mit nur 331 mm² deutlich kleiner als im Vergleich zur Vega 64. Bei dieser war der Die mit 495 mm² im 14-nm-Verfahren deutlich größer und vereinte ca. 12,5 Mrd. Transistoren. Beim Vega-20-Chip sind es mit ca. 13,2 Mrd. etwas mehr. Insgesamt bietet die AMD Radeon VII 3.840 Shadereinheiten. Raytracing- oder Tensor-Kerne, mit denen Nvidia seine neuen RTX-Modelle ausgestattet hat, gibt es bei AMD nicht.

Performance

Die Leistung der AMD Radeon VII konnte im Vergleich zur Radeon-RX-Vega-Serie gesteigert werden. Bei Spielen positioniert sich die Radeon VII im Durchschnitt auf dem Level einer Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080. Mit dieser Leistung ordnet sich die AMD Radeon VII im High-End-Desktop-Segment ein und kann die Spiele des Jahres 2018 in hohen Einstellungen und 4K-Auflösung flüssig darstellen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der AMD Radeon VII wird vom Hersteller mit 300 Watt angegeben und liegt damit um 5 Watt höher als im Vergleich zur älteren Radeon RX Vega 64.

Synthetische Benchmarks - auf Augenhöhe mit einer RTX 2080

Die AMD Radeon VII liegt bei den synthetischen Benchmarks auf dem Niveau einer Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 OC. Der direkte Vergleich zu einer AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 zeigt einen Leistungszuwachs von teilweise deutlich über 20 Prozent. Die Radeon RX 590, welche vor Kurzem als Refresh die RX 580 ersetzte, findet sich weit abgeschlagen wieder. Somit ist die AMD Radeon VII die momentan schnellste Grafikkarte im AMD-Lager.

Anders als bei den synthetischen Benchmarks präsentiert sich die AMD Radeon VII bei den zahlreichen Spieletests. Hier kann sich die Grafikkarte nur in hohen Auflösungen von der Vega 64 absetzen. Hier zeigt sich einmal mehr, dass sich ein Kauf nur lohnt, wenn auch der passende Monitor vorhanden ist. Wer vorrangig in 1.080p zockt, sollte lieber zur Vega 64 greifen, wenn es unbedingt ein 3D-Beschleuniger aus dem Hause AMD sein soll. Das Kopf-an-Kopf-Duell mit der Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 OC gibt es bei den Spieletests allerdings nicht. Die GeForce RTX 2080 gibt hier im Vergleich den Ton an und wird nur von der noch schnelleren Nvidia Titan RTX übertroffen.

Dass die GPU ihren Takt sehr gut halten kann, zeigt der Frameverlauf, welchen wir mit dem Spiel The Witcher 3 im Ultra-Preset aufgezeichnet haben. Die durchschnittliche Framerate liegt bei 75 Bildern pro Sekunde und auch nach einer Stunde fällt diese nicht ab. Somit scheint das Kühlkonzept der AMD Radeon VII aufzugehen.

Compute-Performance

In Luxmark Room schafft es die Radeon VII, sich teilweise vor der GeForce RTX 2080 zu platzieren. Je nach Anwendung und Benchmark variiert jedoch die Leistung zwischen den beiden Kontrahenten, sodass die Radeon VII im Luxmark-Sala-Benchmark ca. 15 Prozent hinter der RTX 2080 liegt. Ein ähnliches Bild zeigt sich auch beim ComputeMark. Teilweise kann die Radeon VII sogar die Titan RTX überbieten. Insgesamt hinterlässt die AMD Radeon VII bei der Compute-Performance einen besseren Eindruck als zuvor bei den Spieletests.
