Die NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M ist eine DirectX 11 Notebook-Grafikkarte der oberen Mittelklasse, welche Mitte 2013 vorgestellt wurde. Sie basiert auf dem GK106 Chip der Kepler-Serie und wird in 28nm bei TSMC hergestellt. Im Vergleich zur GTX 660M basiert die GTX 760M nicht mehr auf dem GK107, sondern auf dem GK106 und bietet die doppelte Anzahl an Shaderkernen. Der Kerntakt wurde jedoch auf 675 MHz (Basistakt) gesenkt. Speichertakt, 128-Bit Speicherbus und der Einsatz von schnellem GDDR5 Grafikspeicher bleiben jedoch identisch.

 

Die GeForce 700M Serie bietet als neues Feature den sogenannten GPU Boost 2.0. Damit kann sich der Grafikkern automatisch übertakten wenn genügend Kühlleistung vorhanden ist. Laut Nvidia sollen dadurch bis zu 15% mehr Performance möglich sein, wenn Applikation und Notebook genügend Spielraum bieten. 

 

Architektur

Der GK106 verfügt als Kepler-Chip über 5 Shader-Blöcke mit je 192 CUDA Cores, die vom Hersteller mit dem Kürzel SMX bezeichnet werden. Bei der 760M sind davon 4 aktiviert. Zwei SMX bilden zusammen mit zwei Polymorph Engines und einer gemeinsamen Raster Engine einen sogenannten GPC (Graphics Processing Cluster). Da die Shader keine eigene Takt-Domain mehr besitzen (Hot Clock), entspricht die Rechenleistung in etwa der Hälfte der Einheiten der Fermi-Architektur mit doppelter Taktrate. Diese Änderung ist einer der Gründe dafür, dass sich laut Nvidia die Energieeffizienz gegenüber dem Vorgänger verdoppelt hat. Auch die Tesselations-Leistung soll - speziell bei hohen Faktoren - noch einmal deutlich verbessert worden sein.

 

Leistung

Die Performance der GeForce GTX 760M liegt durch die höhere Shaderanzahl deutlich vor der alten GTX 660M. Durch den GPU Boost 2.0 ist die Leistung jedoch von Applikation und Kühlleistung des Notebooks abhängig. Nvidia gibt eine Verbesserung von 30% in eigenen Messungen an. 

In Begleitung eines Quadcore-Prozessors aus Intels Haswell-Generation positioniert sich die GTX760M in unseren Tests auf Augenhöhe mit der älteren GTX 670M oder auch der Radeon HD 8870M (3DMark Fire Strike Graphics). Damit steht die Nvidia-GPU als Einstieg in den Bereich der leistungsstärksten Spiele-GPUs und taugt für ambitionierte Laptop-Gamer. Wer ganz vorn mitspielen will, der braucht hingegen eine GeForce GTX 780M, welche im gleichen Benchmark 150 % schneller rechnet.

Ein SLI-Gespann aus zwei GeForce GT 650M kann in Verbindung mit einem Dual Core geschlagen werden (3DMark 11). Die Radeon HD 6970M liegt in den synthetischen Benchmarks zirka 10 % zurück, die Radeon HD 8870M wird aber nur um wenige Prozentpunkte abgeschlagen (Cinebench R11.5 OpenGL 64 Bit).

In anspruchsvollen Games, wie Crysis 3, BioShock Infinite oder Hitman: Absolution, sorgt die 760M in hohen Einstellungen für flüssige Frameraten und toppt dabei teilweise die alte GTX 670MX / 670M (Crysis). Für Ultra-Details (1.920 x 1.080) reicht es in derartigen Games aber nicht. AMDs 2012er Topmodell Radeon HD 7970M ist in hohen Details oftmals 20 % schneller, in Ultra-Details sogar 40 %. Hierbei kommt es jedoch auf Treiber und andere Faktoren an, so liegt die GTX 760M in Sleeping Dogs mit der HD 7970M gleichauf.

Weniger anspruchsvolle bzw. ältere Games, wie Dead Space 3, Battlefield 2 & 3, Modern Warfare 3, Deus Ex Human Revolution oder Dirt 3, sind problemlos in höchstens Details auf Full-HD spielbar. Das schaffen die HD 8870M oder die ältere GeForce GTX 675M nicht (Battlefield 3).

Dadurch eignet sich die GTX 760M bei anspruchsvollen Spielen meistens für mittlere Auflösungen wie 1366x768 und hohen Detailsettings.

 

Features

Das Featureset entspricht den Keplerkarten der GeForce GTX 600M Serie wie der GTX 670MX. Bis zu 4 aktive Displays (mit Optimus u.U. weniger) können mit der GTX 760M betrieben werden, die mit einer maximalen Auflösung von 3840 x 2160 Pixeln zum Beispiel über DisplayPort 1.2 oder HDMI 1.4a angebunden werden können. HD-Audio-Formate wie Dolby True HD und DTS-HD lassen sich als Bitstream an einen geeigneten Receiver senden. Wie in der Vergangenheit kann jedoch auch weiterhin 3D Vision nicht mit Optimus-Unterstützung kombiniert werden.

Der PureVideo HD Videoprozessor der fünften Generation (VP5) kann die Formate MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 und VC1/WMV9 bis zu einer Auflösung von 4k decodieren und somit den Prozessor entlasten. Auch zwei parallele Streams, beispielsweise für Picture-in-Picture bei einer Blu-Ray, sind möglich. Eine weitere Neuerung ist die Integration eines dedizierten Videoencoders ähnlich Intels Quick Sync, der über die NVENC-API angesprochen werden kann.

 

Die Leistungsaufnahme der GeForce GTX 760M sollte ähnlich ausfallen wie bei der GTX 660M (50 Watt laut Gerüchten). Dadurch eignet sich die Grafikkarte für Notebooks im Bereich 15-17 Zoll. Bei geringer Last helfen zusätzliche Taktstufen dabei, Energie einzusparen, im Leerlauf kann die GPU mit Hilfe der Optimus-Technologie zugunsten eines IGP auch vollständig deaktiviert werden.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M

Die NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M ist eine DirectX-11-fähige Notebook-Grafikkarte der Oberklasse, welche im Herbst 2013 vorgestellt wurde. Sie basiert auf dem GK104-Chip der Kepler-Architektur (28-nm-Prozess) und bietet wie die alte GeForce GTX 680M 1344 1D-Shader. Die Taktrate ist mit 719 MHz ebenfalls nahezu identisch. Der Speichertakt (4 GByte GDDR5) liegt bei 900 MHz (3.600 MHz effektiv), wodurch sich in Verbindung mit einem 256-Bit-Interface eine Speicherbandbreite von 115.2 GB/s ergibt.

Architektur

Mit Kepler hat Nvidia Anfang 2012 die ältere Fermi-Architektur abgelöst, die unter anderem bei verschiedenen Chips und Modellen der GeForce-500M-Serie zum Einsatz kam. Der GK104 verfügt als Kepler-Chip über 8 Shader-Blöcke mit je 192 CUDA Cores, die vom Hersteller mit dem Kürzel SMX bezeichnet werden. Bei der 775M sind davon 7 aktiviert. Zwei SMX bilden zusammen mit zwei Polymorph Engines und einer gemeinsamen Raster Engine einen sogenannten GPC (Graphics Processing Cluster). Als weitere Neuerungen werden zudem erstmals PCIe 3.0 sowie ein Turbo-Modus unterstützt. Dieser kann - ausreichende Kühlungsreserven vorausgesetzt - die Kerntaktrate um bis zu 15 Prozent anheben. Der Turbo steht unabhängig vom Betriebssystem in jedem Notebook zur Verfügung.

Leistung

Die Grafikleistung der GeForce GTX 775M bewegt sich auf dem Niveau der GTX 680M oder AMD Radeon HD 7970M. Auch anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen in maximalen Details und hohen Auflösungen flüssig. Lediglich Metro 2033 ruckelte bei unserem Test der GTX 680M mit maximalen Settings.

Features

Das aktualisierte Featureset umfasst nun die Unterstützung von bis zu 4 aktiven Displays (mit Optimus u.U. weniger), die mit einer maximalen Auflösung von 3840 x 2160 Pixeln zum Beispiel über DisplayPort 1.2 oder HDMI 1.4a angesteuert werden können. Bei geringer Last helfen zusätzliche Taktstufen, um Energie zu sparen. Im Leerlauf kann die GPU mithilfe der Optimus-Technologie zugunsten einer integrierten Grafikeinheit auch vollständig deaktiviert werden (nur ohne 3D Vision).
