Die NVIDIA Quadro K3100M ist eine schnelle DirectX-11- und OpenGL-4.3-fähige Workstation-Grafikkarte für Notebooks. Sie basiert wie die Consumer GeForce GTX 780M auf dem 28-nm-Chip GK104 (Kepler-Serie), besitzt allerdings nur 768 aktive Shadereinheiten. Die Grafikkarte ist für die Shark-Bay-Generation gedacht (Haswell) und die Nachfolgerin der Quadro K3000M (Chief-River-Plattform). Es werden bis zu 4 GB GDDR5 als Grafikspeicher eingesetzt, die mit 800 MHz (I/O-Takt 1.600 MHz, 3.200 MHz effektiv) getaktet werden und über einen 256 Bit Speicherbus angebunden sind (102,4 GB/s). Eine wichtige Neuerung ist die erstmalige Unterstützung von PCIe 3.0.

Die Quadro-Grafikkarten bieten zertifizierte Treiber, welche auf Stabiltität und Performance bei professionellen Anwendungen (CAD-, DCC-, Medizin-, Prospektions-, Visualisierungsanwendungen) optimiert sind. Dadurch ist die Performance im Vergleich zu den Consumergrafikkarten mit gleichem Chip in diesen Bereichen deutlich besser.

Architektur 

Mit Kepler löst Nvidia die ältere Fermi-Architektur ab, die unter anderem bei verschiedenen Chips und Modellen der GeForce-500M-Serie zum Einsatz kam. Der GK104 verfügt als Kepler-Chip über 8 Shader-Blöcke mit je 192 CUDA Cores, die vom Hersteller mit dem Kürzel SMX bezeichnet werden. Bei der K3100M sind davon aber lediglich 4 aktiviert. Zwei SMX bilden zusammen mit zwei Polymorph Engines und einer gemeinsamen Raster Engine einen sogenannten GPC (Graphics Processing Cluster). Da die Shader keine eigene Takt-Domain mehr besitzen (Hot Clock), entspricht die Rechenleistung in etwa der Hälfte der Einheiten der Fermi-Architektur mit doppelter Taktrate. Diese Änderung ist einer der Gründe dafür, dass sich laut Nvidia die Energieeffizienz gegenüber Fermi verdoppelt hat. Auch die Tesselations-Leistung soll, speziell bei hohen Faktoren, noch einmal deutlich verbessert worden sein.

Leistung

In Anwendungen und Spielen platziert sich die K3100M knapp unter dem Level der alten Quadro K4000M. Damit liegt die Leistung zwischen den Consumer-Modellen GTX 765M und GTX 760M. In aktuellen 3D-Spielen (Stand Mitte 2013) besitzt die Karte damit ausreichende Leistungsreserven für hohe oder sehr hohe Auflösungen und Qualitätseinstellungen.

Features

Das Featureset umfasst wie bei der schnelleren K4100M die Unterstützung von bis zu 4 aktiven Displays (mit Optimus u.U. weniger), die mit einer maximalen Auflösung von 3840 x 2160 Pixeln zum Beispiel über DisplayPort 1.2 oder HDMI 1.4a angebunden werden können. HD-Audio-Formate wie Dolby True HD und DTS-HD lassen sich als Bitstream an einen geeigneten Receiver senden. Wie in der Vergangenheit kann jedoch auch weiterhin 3D Vision nicht mit Optimus-Unterstützung kombiniert werden.

Die Rechenkerne der Grafikkarte können per CUDA und OpenCL 1.2 auch für generelle Berechnungen herangezogen werden.

Der PureVideo HD Videoprozessor der fünften Generation (VP5) wurde vom GF119-Chip übernommen. Dieser kann die Formate MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 und VC1/WMV9 bis zu einer Auflösung von 4k decodieren und somit den Prozessor entlasten. Auch zwei parallele Streams, beispielsweise für Picture-in-Picture bei einer Blu-Ray, sind möglich. Eine weitere Neuerung ist die Integration eines dedizierten Videoencoders ähnlich Intels Quick Sync, der über die NVENC-API angesprochen werden kann.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der Quadro K3100M entspricht laut Nvidia der alten Quadro K3000M und liegt bei 75 Watt TGP (Max Power Consumption). Dadurch ist die Karte am besten für große 17-Zoll-Notebooks geeignet.

NVIDIA Quadro K620M

Die NVIDIA Quadro K620M ist eine DirectX-11- und OpenGL-4.5-fähige Workstation-Grafikkarte für Notebooks. Sie basiert auf dem 28-nm-Chip GM108 (Maxwell-Serie) und besitzt 384 Shadereinheiten. Die Grafikkarte tritt die Nachfolge der deutlich schwächeren Quadro K610M an, die noch auf der Kepler-Architektur basierte. Es werden bis zu 2 GB DDR3 als Grafikspeicher eingesetzt, die mit 1.000 MHz (effektiv 2.000 MHz) getaktet werden und über einen 64 Bit Speicherbus angebunden sind (16 GB/s).

Die Quadro-Grafikkarten bieten zertifizierte Treiber, welche auf Stabiltität und Performance bei professionellen Anwendungen (CAD-, DCC-, Medizin-, Prospektions-, Visualisierungsanwendungen) optimiert sind. Dadurch ist die Performance im Vergleich zu den Consumergrafikkarten mit gleichem Chip in diesen Bereichen deutlich besser.

Architektur 

Die Maxwell-Architektur des GM108-Chips wurde gegenüber der älteren Kepler-Generation kräftig überarbeitet, wobei der Fokus insbesondere auf der Steigerung der Energieeffizienz lag. Dafür hat Nvidia unter anderem die Shader-Cluster (SMM) umstrukturiert, die nunmehr nur noch 128 statt zuvor 192 ALUs integrieren. GM108 verfügt über 3 SMMs und damit 384 Shadereinheiten, 24 TMUs und 8 ROPs (64-Bit-Interface).

Zudem wurden die Scheduler modifiziert, was im Ergebnis zu deutlichen Energieeinsparungen und einer höheren Auslastung der Shader führen soll. Nvidia verspricht, dass ein Maxwell-SMM mit 128 ALUs 90 Prozent der Leistung eines Kepler-SMX mit 192 ALUs erreicht. Eine weitere Optimierung betrifft den stark vergrößerten L2-Cache, der einen Teil der Speicherzugriffe abfangen kann und damit den Einsatz eines relativ schmalen Speicherinterfaces gestattet.

GM108 unterstützt DirectX 11.2 weiterhin nur mit Feature Level 11.0, soll dafür aber bereits kompatibel zu DirectX 12 sein.

Leistung

Die technischen Daten der Quadro K620M entsprechen exakt denen des Consumer-Modells GeForce 840M, sodass die Leistung in Spielen und sonstigen 3D-Anwendungen auf gleichem Niveau liegt. Spiele des Jahres 2014/2015 werden in der Regel in niedrigen bis mittleren Einstellung flüssig dargestellt. Im Vergleich mit anderen Quadro-Modellen ordnet sich die K620M etwas unterhalb der älteren K1100M ein.

Features

GM108 integriert ebenso wie GM107 die sechste Generation der PureVideo HD Video-Engine (VP6). Die Performance beim Decodieren von H.264- und MPEG-2-Material wurde abermals verbessert, zudem sind natürlich auch alle Features der Vorgänger (4K-Unterstützung, PiP, Videoencoder über NVENC-API) mit an Bord.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der Quadro K620M sollte inkl. Speicher in einer Größenordnung von etwa 30 Watt (oder weniger) liegen. Damit ist die Karte für Notebooks ab etwa 13 - 14 Zoll geeignet. Bei geringer Last helfen zusätzliche Taktstufen dabei, Energie einzusparen, im Leerlauf kann die GPU mit Hilfe der Optimus-Technologie auch vollständig zugunsten der Prozessorgrafik deaktiviert werden.
