NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS

Die Nvidia GeForce 9200M GS ist eine DirectX 10 fähige Grafikkarte für kleine und leichte Notebooks und technisch eine niedriger getaktete 9300M GS.

Im Vergleich zu älteren 8400M Serie bzw. der 9300M G besitzt die 9200M GS nur 8 Unified Shader und der Produktionsprozess wurde von 80nm auf 65nm umgestellt.  Weiters wurden die Videofunktionen (PureVideo HD mit VP3) verbessert (z.B., weniger CPU Belastung bei HD Dekodierung) und Hybrid SLI (HybridPower und GeforceBoost) hinzugefügt (nur in Verbindung mit einem aktuellen Nvidia Chipsatz).

HybridPower ermöglicht das Umschalten zwischen onboard Grafik (im Nvidia Chipsatz) und dedizierter Grafikkarte (9200M GS) in Windows Vista. Dadurch kann die dedizierte Grafikkarte abgeschaltet werden, wenn sie nicht benötigt wird (Office, Surfen) und dadurch Energie gespart werden. Hybrid Power kann im Vista Betrieb umgeschalten werden (derzeit noch manuell per Tool, später lt. Nvidia automatisch im Treiber). GeforceBoost schaltet die onboard Grafik des Chipsatzes und die 9200M GS in einen SLI Verbund und steigert dadurch die Gesamtleistung.

Wie auch bei der 8400M G übernehmen 8 so genannte Stream Prozessoren die anstehende Grafikarbeit (die früher die Pixel und Vertex Shader übernommen haben). Der Vorteil ist, daß es theortisch keinen Leerlauf der ALUs mehr gibt. Die Streamprozessoren sind bei NVIDIA 1-dimensional (1D) und können pro Takt eine Skalaroperation mit einer MADD- (Addition und Multiplikation) und MUL-Anweisung (Multiplikation) durführen. Ausserdem taktet NVIDIA die Shader-ALUs etwas höher als den restlichen Chip.

Die 9200M GS sollte sich knapp unter der 9300M GS einreihen und anspruchslose Spiele flüssig darstellen können. Ältere (DirectX 9) Spiele wie Half Life 2, Far Cry oder Fear sind bei mittleren Details spielbar.

Bei Verwendung des langsamer getakteten GDDR2 Speichers (400 statt 700 MHz) ist die Grafikleistung etwa 20% niedriger als bei GDDR3 (jedoch sinkt auch der Stromverbrauch um etwa 2 Watt auf 11 Watt).

Die kommenden gleichnamigen Desktopgrafikkarten 9300 GE / GS dürften zwar auf den selben G98 Kern basieren, durch höhere Taktung aber mehr Leistung zeigen.
