Intel Core i7 Notebook Prozessoren (Clarksfield)

Intel hat am 23 September 2009 die neuen Core i7 Quad Core Prozessoren für High-End Notebooks vorgestellt. Die drei neuen Prozessoren sollen die mobilen Quad Core CPUs ersetzen und sind relativ niedrig getaktete Dekstop Core i7 CPUs mit eingebauter Übertaktungsfunktion.

Der mobile Core i7 basiert auf die gerade vorgestellten 45nm Desktop i5/i7 (Lynnfield) Prozessoren und ist dadurch der erste native Quad-Core Prozessor für Notebooks (die Core 2 Quad CPUs bestehen aus zwei Core 2 Duo CPUs).

Größte Neuerung ist der integrierte Speichercontroller für DDR3 Speicherriegel im Prozessor. Durch die direkte Anbindung soll die Speicherperformance deutlich besser sein (mehr als 2x höhere Speicher Bandbreiten Performance in SiSoft Sandra 2009 laut Intel).

 

Ein weiterer Vorteil der Architektur ist die Möglichkeit einzelne Bereiche des Prozessors (Kerne, Cache, I/O, Speichersystem) dynmisch Ein- und Ausschalten zu können. Dadurch kann man bei geringer Last im Vergleich zu den üblichen Prozessor States noch zusätzlich Strom Sparen (keine Leakströme der ausgeschalteten Teile).

Da die mobilen i7 CPUs mit relative geringen Taktraten starten (1,6 – 2,0 GHz) gewinnt die bereits in den letzten Core 2 Duo eingeführte Turbo Boost Technik zusätzlich an Bedeutung. Je nach Auslastung der Kerne und Temperatur der CPU können sich einzelne Kerne deutlich übertakten. Wenn z.B. nur ein Kern ausgelastet ist (und die Kühllösung ausreichend dimensioniert ist) kann sich der Core i7-820QM von 1,73 GHz auf bis zu 3,06 GHz übertakten. Dank dieses automatischen Übertakten, kann der niedrig getaktete i7 besonders bei alten Anwendungen (wie ältere Spiele) welche nur einen Kern benutzen, punkten. Daher kann er in diesem Anwendungsfall auch schnelle Core 2 Duo Prozessoren überholen.

Wenn alle 4 Kerne benutzt werden, kann sich die CPU nur um eine Stufe (133 MHz) höhertakten (wenn der TDP noch nicht ausgenutzt wird). Je weniger Kerne, desto Mehr Stufen kann die Turbo Funktion nutzen (bis zu 10 beim Core i7-820QM von 1.73 GHz auf 3.06).

Wie weit sich der Prozessor übertaktet kann man mittels des Turbo Boost Technology Monitor Widget für Vista und Windows 7 betrachten.

Die zu Northwood Zeiten eingeführte Hyper-Threading Technologie findet sich nun auch im mobilen Core i7 wieder. Falls die Recheneinheiten nicht voll ausgelastet werden (z.B. nur eine Gleitkommarechenoperation) kann Hyper-Threading einen zweiten Thread mit ihr ausführen um so die Rechenwerke besser auszulasten. Durch Hyper-Threading gibt sich der Prozessor daher als 8-Kern CPU aus und kann dadurch bis zu 25% schneller arbeiten. Manchmal kann es jedoch durch den Overhead bei Hyper-Threading auch zu geringen Performance-Einbußen kommen.

Durch den integrierten Speicherkontroller und das native Quad-Core Desing, wurde auch die Cache Struktur beim i7 im Vergleich zum Core 2 Quad umgestellt. Das neue Multi-Level Shared Cache System baut nicht mehr nur auf riesige Level 2 Cache Mengen, sondern bietet nun auch einen von allen 4 Kernen gemeinsam genutzten Level 3 Cache. Auch diese Änderung soll der Performance dienlich sein.

Durch die Integration des Speicherkontrollers in die CPU, konnte nun auch der Chipsatz vereinfacht werden. Statt der ehemaligen 3-Chip Lösung bei den Core 2 Duo Prozessoren (CPU + Northbridge + Southbridge) braucht man beim Core i7 nur noch einen zustätzlichen Chip welcher sich um PCI-E, USB, SATA und die Anbindung von LAN und Soundchip kümmert. Dieser wird per DMI und nicht mehr per FSB angebunden. Zum Launch kommt der PM55 getaufte Chipsatz mit 14 USB 2.0, 6 SATA 3GB/s und 8 PCIe 2.0 x1 2.5 GT/s Anbindungen zur Anwendung.

Die einzelnen Rechenwerke selbst wurden im Vergleich zur Core 2 Architektur nur minimal verbessert. Neue SSE4.1 und SSE4.2 Instruktionen und kleine Optimierungen zählen hier zu den Highlights. Durch den direkt verbauten Speicherkontroller und die neue Cache Struktur sollte die Performanced / MHz trotzdem verbessert worden sein.

Performance

Nach Intels Marketing Informationen kann die neue Architektur in fast allen Anwendungsgebieten sichtbare Steigerungen im Vergleich zu den alten Core 2 Prozessoren erzielen. Im Vergleich zum ehemaligen Spitzenreiter dem QX9300 Quad-Core erzielt der neue Core i7-920XM Prozessor zwischen 10-80% bessere Ergebnisse laut Intel. Theoretisch kann die CPU dank der Übertaktung sowohl bei Single-Threaded Anwendungen punkten als auch bei Multi-Threaded Applikationen (durch die neue Architektur). Nur im Extremfall, wenn die Übertaktung nicht greift, kann der deutlich schneller getaktete QX9300 punkten.

Anfangs startet Intel mit jediglich drei Modellen zu relativ gesalzenen Preisen. Alle drei Modelle besitzen 4 Kerne (8 Threads dank Hyperthreading) und DDR3-1333 Support. Die Preise gelten bei Abnahme von 1000 Stück.

Der Intel PM55 Express Chipsatz kostet $40.

Anzumerken ist, das die TDP Werte höher als bei den Core 2 Quad Modellen ist, da der Speicherkontroller in die CPU gewandert ist. Der Stromverbrauch der CPU + Chipsatz sollte im Vergleich zum Core 2 Quad + Chipsatz in etwa gleich geblieben sein.
