NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT SLI

Die NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT SLI bezeichnet zwei einzelne DirectX 10 fähige 8600M GT Grafikkarten im SLI Verbund. Je nach Spiel ist der Verbund etwa 0% bis 60% schneller als eine einzelne Grafikkarte. DirectX9 Spiele sind auch in höheren Auflösungen mit hohen Details flüssig spielbar (wenn SLI gut unterstützt wird). DirectX 10 Spiele sind bis jetzt sehr anspruchsvoll (z.B. Crysis, World in Conflict) und sind derzeit nicht in den höchsten DirectX 10 Detailstufen flüssig spielbar. Eventuell wird dies durch spätere Treiberoptimierungen besser.

Die 8600M gehört weltweit zu den ersten Notebook-GPUs, die DirextX 10 unterstützen und die H.264-Dekodierung von HD-Filmen beschleunigen.

Eine Besonderheit der Grafikkarte sind die "Unified Shader" oder ALUs (Arithmetic Logical Unit). Es existieren keine dedizierten Pixel- bzw Vertexshader mehr, sondern 32 so genannte Stream Prozessoren pro Grafikkarte übernehmen einfach die anstehende Grafikarbeit (die früher die Pixel und Vertex Shader übernommen haben). Der Vorteil ist, daß es theortisch keinen Leerlauf der ALUs mehr gibt. Die Streamprozessoren sind bei NVIDIA 1-dimensional (1D) und können pro Takt eine Skalaroperation mit einer MADD- (Addition und Multiplikation) und MUL-Anweisung (Multiplikation) durführen. Ausserdem taktet NVIDIA die SHader-ALUs etwas höher als den restlichen Chip.

Die Speichertaktung jeder GeForce 8600M GT des SLI Verbunds ist abhängig vom verbauten Speichertyp: 400 MHz bei GDDR2 und 700 MHz bei GDDR3.

Verglichen mit Desktop Grafikkarten liegt die 8600M GT im SLI Verbund knapp unter zwei 8600 GT SLI (da jede Desktopkarte eine höhere Chiptaktung aufweist), bei der GDDR3 Notebookversion.
