NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX SLI

Zwei Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX im SLI Verbund bieten die damals schnellste Grafiklösung für Notebooks. Später wurde die Kombination auch als 9800M GT SLI verkauft. Stromverbrauch und Abwärme sind jedoch doppelt so hoch wie bei einer einzigen 8800M GTX, da beide Grafikkarten gleichzeitig die Bilder berechnen. Die Speichermenge verdoppelt sich nicht, da jede Karte den selben Speicherinhalt bereitstellen muß (2x512 MB Grafikkartenspeicher zählen also wie 512 MB).

In Spielen ist die Verbesserung zu einer 8800M GTX, je nach SLI Unterstützung, derzeit bei 0-9% Leistungssteigerung. In synthetischen Benchmarks wie 3DMark03 sind derzeit Leistungssteigerungen von bis zu 36% möglich. Die meisten DirectX 10 Spiele laufen daher (wie auch bei der 8800M GTX) flüssig mit hohen Details flüssig (ausser dem hardwarehungrigen Crysis, bei dem man die Einstellungen noch zurückschrauben muss). Diese Erkenntnisse sind aus unserem XPS M1730 Testbericht.

Bis jetzt ist die SLI Lösung wegen der Geringen Leistungsverbesserung bei Spielen und des deutlich höheren Stromverbrauchs vom Preis/Leistungsstandpunkt nicht empfehlenswert.

Eine Besonderheit der GeForce 8800M GTX SLI sind die "Unified Shader". Es existieren keine dedizierten Pixel- bzw Vertexshader mehr, sondern 2x96 so genannte Stream Prozessoren übernehmen einfach die anstehende Grafikarbeit (die früher die Pixel und Vertex Shader übernommen haben). Weiters sind die Shadereinheiten höher getaktet als der Chip (1250 MHz versus 800 MHz).

Durch den hohen Stromverbrauch und die hohe Abwärme wird der Chip (wie der Vorgänger 7950 GTX SLI) nur in sehr großen und schweren Notebooks erscheinen. Derzeit sind 2x35 Watt TDP als Gerücht im Umlauf.

Folgende durchschnittliche Spieleleistungen basieren auf die Erfahrungen mit unserem Dell XPS M1730 Testgerät mit T7700 CPU, PhysX Beschleuniger und 4 GB RAM. Bei anderen Geräten können die Daten deshalb mehr oder weniger stark abweichen.

Call of Duty 4: 1920x1200, high: 88 fps -> voll spielbar (mit 4x AA immer noch etwa 45 fps)
Company of Heroes 1.7: 1024x768, high: 30 fps -> gut spielbar
World in Conflict: 1024x768, very high DX10: 25 fps (Benchmark) -> spielbar (mit Rucklern)
Crysis: 1280x800, high: knapp spielbar (1024x768, high DX10: 35 fps)
Unreal Tournament 3: 1920x1200, max: 50 fps -> voll spielbar (min: 35 fps)
