AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT im Test: bekannte Problematik beim Referenzdesign

Navi vs. Turing

Der 7-nm-Navi-10-Grafikchip ist stromsparender als die Polaris- und Vega-Chips. Doch das Kühldesign der Radeon RX 5700 XT konnte im Test nicht komplett überzeugen. Die versprochene Leistung ist nachweisbar und 1.440p Gaming ist mit der Grafikkarte durchweg möglich. Wie sich die Grafikkarte allerdings gegen Nvidias Turing-Familie schlägt, beleuchten wir in diesem Review.

RDNA heißt die neue Architektur der Navi-Grafikkarten von AMD. Gefertigt werden sie im 7-nm-Prozess und vereinen insgesamt 2.560 Shadereinheiten bei der Radeon RX 5700 XT. Den 7-nm-Fertigungsprozess hatte AMD erstmals bei der Radeon VII verwendet. Damit ist AMD weiterhin der Vorreiter, wenn es um die Implementierung neuer Features geht. Genauso ist es auch beim PCI Express 4.0 Interface, welches im Vergleich zu PCI Express 3.0 die Bandbreite verdoppelt. Wer jedoch auf PCI Express 4.0 nicht verzichten will, muss ein Mainboard mit X570-Chipsatz sein Eigen nennen. Dazu kommt noch ein neuer AMD-Prozessor auf Zen2-Basis.

Der Navi 10 getaufte Grafikchip der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT ist bereits der Vollausbau. Das heißt, dass AMD nicht ohne weiteres eine noch schnellere GPU aus dem Hut zaubern kann. Den etwas beschnittenen Grafikchip gibt es bei der AMD Radeon RX 5700. Im Vollausbau bietet der Navi-10-Chip genauso viele Rechenekerne wie die GeForce RTX 2070S FE. Diese hat Nvidia schon vor dem Launch der Navi-Grafikkarten präsentiert, um die Leistungskrone behalten zu können. Ob dies gelungen ist, dazu kommen wir später noch.

Die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT ist mit einer Leistungsaufnahme von 225 Watt (TGP) angegeben und liegt damit knapp über der RTX 2070S FE (215 Watt). Das Kühldesign der Radeon RX 5700 Serie basiert weiterhin auf einem Radiallüfter-Konstrukt, welches die Abwärme direkt aus dem Gehäuse befördert. Eine Vapor-Chamber-Einheit befindet sich direkt über dem GPU-DIE, um die entstehende Hitze schnell wegzubekommen.

Wer bei AMD ein Modell der RX 5700 XT kaufen möchte, muss inklusive Steuern mit rund 420 Euro rechnen. Damit ist die RX 5700 XT deutlich preiswerter als die GeForce RTX 2070S Founders Edition (529 Euro) und liegt im Preisvergleich auf Augenhöhe mit der GeForce RTX 2060S Founders Edition (419 Euro).

Das Testsystem - Ryzen 7 2700X als Basis

Als Testsystem dient eine aktuelle AMD-Plattform auf Basis des Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 WiFi. Die CPU, ein AMD RYZEN 7 2700X, bietet eine gute CPU-Leistung und als Kühlung nutzen wir eine AIO (Be Quiet Silent Loop 280mm). Der 16-GB-Arbeitsspeicher stammt von G-Skill und taktet mit 3.400 MHz. Als Monitor nutzen wir den Acer Predator XB321HK. Dieser schränkt uns aufgrund der UHD-Tauglichkeit nicht ein. Ein großer Dank geht an dieser Stelle an AMD für die Bereitstellung der Testplattform.

Wir haben uns bewusst gegen die Nutzung einer X570-Plattform inklusive eines Ryzen 3900X entschieden, um die Testbedingungen gegenüber den Nvidia-Super-Grafikkarten nicht zu verändern.

Die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT im Detail

Die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT ist eine Desktop-GPU der oberen Mittelklasse und wird im 7nm Verfahren gefertigt. Der Grafikprozessor verfügt über 2.560 Shadereinheiten, sowie über 8 GB GDDR6-VRAM mit einem 256-Bit-Interface (7 GHz, 448 GB/s).

Features

RDNA dient als Basis für den Navi 10 getauften Grafikchip und löst damit die GCN-Architektur der älteren Grafikkarten ab. Als weltweit erste Grafikkarte unterstützt die Radeon RX-5700-Serie PCI Express 4.0. RIS (Radeon Image Sharpening) bietet den Nutzern die Möglichkeit einer detaillierteren Darstellung ohne großen Leistungsverlust. Mit der neuen Media Engine lassen sich nun Videos mit einer Auflösung von bis zu 8K dekodieren und die neue Display Engine unterstützt Bildschirme mit bis zu 8K bei 60Hz inklusive HDR oder 4K HDR mit 144Hz. 

Performance

Die Leistung der AMD Radeon RX 5700XT ist mit einer Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070S vergleichbar. Im internen Duell übertrifft die AMD Radeon RX 5700XT die Leistung einer Radon RX Vega 64 und selbst mit einer weitaus teureren Radeon VII kann es die RX 5700 XT aufnehmen. Mit der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT lassen sich die meisten Spiele der Jahre 2018 und 2019 in 1440p und dem Ultra-Preset flüssig darstellen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der AMD Radeon RX 5700XT wird vom Hersteller mit 225 Watt (TGP) beziffert und liegt damit etwa auf dem Niveau einer Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070S (215 Watt). Der Umstieg auf den neuen Fertigungsprozess und der neuen Architektur sorgt hier für eine deutliche Steigerung der Leitung bei gleichem Energiebedarf. Vergleicht man die Leistung mit einer AMD Radon RX Vega 64, so ist die RX 5700 XT deutlich Effizienter, denn mit 295 Watt benötigte die Vega 64 deutlich mehr Energie.

Die Taktraten der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

Wie auch bei dem kleinen Modell der neuen Navi-Grafikkarten bewirbt AMD die RX 5700 XT mit drei verschiedenen Taktraten. Dabei handelt es sich einmal um den Basistakt, der bei unserem Referenzmodell 1.605 MHz beträgt und dem maximalen Boost-Takt, welcher mit 1.905 MHz angegeben ist. Zudem gesellt sich noch der Game-Takt mit 1.755 MHz. Dies ist ein Durchschnittswert, welcher in den meisten Spielen zu erwarten ist.

Beim VRAM setzt AMD bei seinen Modellen erstmals auf GDDR6-Module. Obwohl die Anbindung von HBM2 möglich wäre, hat sich AMD für die günstigere Lösung entschieden. Das ist gut und treibt den Preis nicht nach oben. Im Vergleich zu Nvidia hat AMD hier keinen Nachteil, denn die RTX 2070S FE ist mit dem gleichen VRAM bestückt. Auch die Taktraten sind bei beiden mit 7.000 MHz gleich. Die Speicherbandbreite liegt somit bei 448 GB/s. Gegenüber der Radeon RX Vega 64 mit 483,8 GB/s ist dieser Nachteil zu verkraften. Die deutlich höheren Herstellungskosten würden in keiner Relation zu der geringen Mehrleistung stehen.

Synthetische Benchmarks

Sythetische Benchmarks zeigen zum einen, welche Leistung in den Grafikkarten steckt, aber zum anderen sind diese Ergebnisse nicht auf die Spielebenchmarks übertragbar. Die 3DMark Tests konnte die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT mit guten Ergebnissen abschließen und sich sogar vor der GeForce RTX 2070S FE platzieren. Bei den Unigine Heaven und den Unigine Valley Benchmarks sieht es allerdings wieder komplett anders aus. Nur die MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z 6G kann die Radeon RX 5700 in Schach halten. An die Leistung einer RTX 2070 oder gar der RTX 2070S kommt die Navi-10-GPU nicht heran.

AMD spricht selbst von 1.440p-Gaming, wenn es um die Leistungsfähigkeit der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT geht. Das bestätigen auch unsere durchgeführten Spieletests. Waren es in QHD noch ausreichend Frames, um ruckelfrei zu spielen, so kommt die RX 5700 XT in 4K schon deutlich an ihre Grenzen. Hier gibt es aber trotzdem einzelne Titel, welche sich trotzdem in dieser hohen Auflösung zocken lassen. Auf einige Details sollte man aber dann verzichten.

Gegen die Kontrahenten im grünen Lager hat es die RX 5700 XT allerdings nicht leicht. Selbst die ab Werk übertaktete RTX 2070 von MSI ist in vielen Spielen schneller als unser Navi-Modell. Eine RTX 2070 Founders Edition wäre vermutlich nur geringfügig langsamer als die Radeon RX 5700 XT. Demzufolge sortiert sich auch die GeForce RTX 2070S FE vor unserem Testsample ein. Jedoch gibt es hin und wieder auch Spiele, welche der AMD-GPU etwas besser liegen. So kann die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT in einzelnen Spielen sogar mit der RTX 2070S mithalten.

Die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT eignet sich ebenso wie der kleinere Navi-Ableger (AMD Radeon RX 5700) für Spiele in Auflösungen bis 1.440p samt Ultra-Settings. In höheren Auflösungen geht der Grafikkarte buchstäblich die Lust aus. Gleiches Schicksal ereilt jedoch auch die RTX 2070S FE, denn auch diese Grafikkarte hat ihre Stärken im 1.440p-Bereich.

Die Frametimes und der Frameverlauf, den wir mit The Witcher 3 (Ultra-Preset) dokumentiert haben, ist besser als bei der GeForce RTX 2070S. Weniger Peaks sind das Ergebnis und die einzelnen Ausreißer sind für den Anwender nicht zu merken. Gleiches gilt für den Frameverlauf, wenngleich sich beim Betrachten des Diagramms schon ein leichter Leistungsverlust andeutet. Mit durchschnittlich 92 FPS ist ruckelfreies Spielen jedoch noch garantiert.

Compute Performance

Aufgrund fehlender Treiberoptimierungen eigenen sich Consumer-Grafikkarten nur bedingt für den Einsatz in Workstations. Doch die Compute Performance soll nicht ungeklärt bleiben und demzufolge müssen sich auch die preiswerteren Gaming-Grafikkarten in den Tests beweisen. Obwohl RX 5700 XT und RTX 2070S FE die gleiche Shaderanzahl besitzen, kann die AMD-GPU nicht mit dem Turin-Chip mithalten. Nur in einzelnen Workloads, welche den AMD-GPUs liegen, können sich die AMD-Grafikkarten absetzen.

Grundsätzlich unterscheiden sich die beiden Navi-Grafikkarten nicht in ihrer Kühleinheit. Die XT-Version bietet jedoch auch auf der Rückseite noch eine Backplate, um die entstehende Abwärme besser verteilen zu können. Da die Radeon RX 5700 XT mit 225 Watt deutlich mehr Energie unter Last benötigt, sind die Temperaturen der GPU höher als beim kleineren Modell. Die Drehzahl des Radiallüfters wird von der Hotspot-Temperatur der GPU beeinflusst. Dieser wird an einer speziellen Stelle gemessen und bei unserm Lasttest lag dieser bei 104 °C. Der VRAM erreichte 75 °C und ist somit nicht im kritischen Bereich. Der Lüfter dreht sich unter Last mit 2.100 U/min. Selbst aus einem geschlossenen Gehäuse ist die Radeon RX 5700 XT damit nicht zu überhören. Im Vergleich zur Radeon RX Vega 64 oder einer Radeon VII ist die Radeon RX 5700 XT aber noch etwas leiser unter Last. Aufgrund der sehr hohen GPU-Temperaturen unter Last, welche schon im Stock-Betrieb erreicht werden, kann die Grafikkarte auch mit dem erhöhten PT nicht mehr Leistung bereitstellen. Demzufolge sind beide Verbrauchswerte mit 326 Watt des Testsystems nahezu identisch. Im Leerlauf ist das Testsystem mit 70 Watt etwas sparsamer als im Vergleich zur RTX 2070S FE. Beim Spielen verbraucht die Navi-GPU mit durchschnittlich 348 Watt genau 4 Watt mehr als die etwas schnellere RTX 2070S von Nvidia. Im hausinternen Duell beider Navi-Karten geht der Punkt Energieeffizienz somit ganz klar an die RX 5700. Das Testsystem ist beim Spielen ca. 50 Watt sparsamer, wenngleich die Leistung der RX 5700 für die meisten ausreichend sein sollte.

Overclocking - bloß nicht im Referenzdesign

Wer gern noch mehr Leistung aus seiner Hardware herausquetschen möchte, kann dies mit der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT durchaus. Jedoch sollte diese Maßnahme nicht mit dem Referenzkühler geschehen. Dieser ist ohnehin schon im Stock-Betrieb sehr am Limit und darüber. Dies konnten wir beim FPS-Log mit The Witcher 3 schon erkennen.

Wir haben dennoch einmal den Versuch gewagt das Referenzmodell der RX 5700 XT zu übertakten. Beim Chip waren nur 100 MHz mehr möglich und der VRAM ließ mit nur 25 MHz fast gar keinen Spielraum zu. Die Ergebnisse der Benchmarks sind nun etwas besser, aber dies war nicht der Erfolg des manuellen Übertaktens. Allein das erhöhte PT brachte einen Leistungsgewinn, solange die Grafikkarte nicht die kritischen Temperaturen erreichte. Wer eine Custom-Wasserkühlung schon in seinem System verbaut hat, kann aus der RX 5700 XT mit einem passenden Wasserkühler noch ordentlich Leistungsreserven freilegen.

Und wer es sich zutraut, kann auch mit den Soft-Powerplay-Tables noch mehr Leistung aus der Grafikkarte holen. Wir weisen an dieser Stelle ausdrücklich darauf hin, dass bei Nutzung dieser Mods jeglicher Garantieanspruch gegenüber dem Hersteller erlischt. Da wir nur eine Leihgabe der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT haben, haben wir von diversen Modifikationen abgesehen. Ohne eine alternative Kühllösung macht die Nutzung der Soft-Powerplay-Tables ohnehin keinen Sinn.

Die AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT hat durchaus das Potenzial, mit den Turing-Grafikkarten von Nvidia mitzuhalten. Vergleichen wir nun nur einmal die UVPs, so liegt die RX 5700 XT auf gleichem Preisniveau wie eine GeForce RTX 2060S Founders Edition. Die Leistung der Radeon RX 5700 XT übertrifft jedoch eine RTX 2070 FE. Hier hat AMD durchaus gute Arbeit geleistet und ist mit der RDNA-Architektur endlich wieder konkurrenzfähig. Das freut uns und vor allem auch für die Kunden, denn Konkurrenz sorgt für Preiskämpfe. Wie sich die Grafikkartenpreise in den nächsten Tagen und Wochen einpendeln, bleibt jedoch abzuwarten. Außerdem folgen demnächst noch die Custom-Modelle der Navi-Karten, welche durchaus die Leistung einer RTX 2070S FE übertreffen können. Leider ist der verbaute Kühler das Zünglein an der Waage, was die Leistung der AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT angeht. Dieser schafft es nur mit Mühe und Not, die Grafikkarte halbwegs zuverlässig zu kühlen, ohne dabei ohrenbetäubend laut zu werden, wie es bei der Vega 64 der Fall war. Leise ist die RX 5700 XT deshalb aber trotzdem nicht. Silent-Freaks werden diese Grafikkarte meiden müssen, denn auch ein geschlossenes Gehäuse hilft bei der Grafikkarte nicht.

Das größte Manko der Radeon RX 5700 XT ist und bleibt die Kühlung. An sich ist die Leistung der Navi-10-GPU gut und reicht vollkommen aus, um alle aktuellen Titel in 1.440p flüssig darzustellen.

Wer aufs Geld achten muss, sollte sich die AMD Radeon RX 5700 genauer anschauen. Diese bietet eine ähnliche Performance, hat aber aufgrund der geringeren Leistungsaufnahme nicht diese Temperaturprobleme.

Im Duell um die Leistungskrone im oberen Mittelfeld kann AMD mit der RX 5700 XT gut mithalten. Nvidia hat mit der GeForce RTX 2070S FE aber das bessere Gesamtpaket mit besserer Kühlung am Start. Mit 529 Euro (UVP) ist der Preis aber auch nicht zu verachten.

Dank neuer GPU-Architektur, kleinerem Fertigungsverfahren und schnellem GDDR6-VRAM hat AMD es geschafft, wieder eine konkurrenzfähige Grafikkarte auf die Beine zu stellen. Nun liegt es an den Bordpartnern, die bekannten Schwächen zu beseitigen, um das Produkt zu perfektionieren.
