Die bessere RTX 2060!

Nvidia kam AMD zuvor und präsentierte noch vor dem Launch der Navi-Karten schon eine verbesserte Generation der eigenen RTX-Modelle. Wir haben die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super in der Founders Edition genauer unter die Lupe genommen. Der Schritt, die RTX 2060S mit 8-GB-VRAM zu bestücken, war definitiv die richtige Entscheidung, soviel können wir an dieser Stelle schon einmal vorwegnehmen. Super steht nun hinter den neuen RTX-Modellen und sie sollen mit etwas mehr Leistung die Navi-Karten in Schach halten. Auch von AMD haben wir den direkten Gegenspieler, die AMD Radeon RX 5700 erhalten. Aber auch die älteren RTX-Modellen, welche noch gar nicht lange auf dem Markt sind, haben wir mit herangezogen, um die Leistung der RTX 2060S zu verdeutlichen. Seitens AMD bietet sich noch die Radeon VII an, welche Gerüchten nach den EOL-Status erreicht hat und demzufolge auch schon bald kaum noch zu bekommen sein sollte.

Mit der Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super haben wir von Nvidia das Referenzmodell erhalten, welches auch als Founders Edition (FE) bekannt ist. Eine langsamere Version, wie es zuvor bei den non-Super Karten der Fall war, gibt es nicht mehr. Äußerlich hat sich kaum etwas verändert. Ein grüner Super-Schriftzug ziert die Vorderseite und auch die Backplate. Das PCB und die Abmessungen der RTX 2060S haben sich nicht verändert, was auch für die Dual-Fan-Kühleinheit gilt. Insgesamt wirkt die Grafikkarte sehr kompakt und hochwertig. Als Besonderheit ist der 8-Pin-Stromanschluss an der Rückseite zu finden. Aber auch dies kennen wir bereits von der GeForce RTX 2060 FE.

Größter Unterschied im Vergleich zum Vorgängermodell ist des VRAM mit nun 8-GB-GDDR6. Daraus resultiert eine höhere Speicherbandbreite, denn insgesamt beherbergt das PCB nun acht Speicherchips. Der GPU-Chip ist weiterhin der TU106, bietet aber nun 2.176 Rechenkerne. Dank mehr RT- und Tensor-Cores wurde auch die Raytracing-Performance etwas aufgebohrt. Das hat natürlich auch seinen Preis, denn die Leistungsaufnahme der GeForce RTX 2060S steigt um 15 Watt auf nun 175 Watt an. Zum aktuellen Testzeitpunkt steht das Einstiegsmodell der aktuellen RTX-Serie für 419 Euro in den Regalen.

Das Testsystem - Ryzen 7 2700X als Basis

Als Testsystem dient eine aktuelle AMD-Plattform auf Basis des Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 WiFi. Die CPU, ein AMD RYZEN 7 2700X, bietet eine gute CPU-Leistung und als Kühlung nutzen wir eine AIO (Be Quiet Silent Loop 280mm). Der 16-GB-Arbeitsspeicher stammt von G-Skill und taktet mit 3.400 MHz. Als Monitor nutzen wir den Acer Predator XB321HK. Dieser schränkt uns aufgrund der UHD-Tauglichkeit nicht ein. Ein großer Dank geht an dieser Stelle an AMD für die Bereitstellung der Testplattform.

Die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060S im Detail


Die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super (2060S) ist eine schnelle Mittelklasse-Grafikkarte für Desktops und basiert auf der aktuellen Turing-Architektur. Im Vergleich zur Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 bietet die Super-Version nun 2.176 Shadereinheiten, einen breiteren Speicherbus und 8 GB GDDR6. Die Basis, der TU106-Grafikchip bleibt jedoch gleich. Im Notebook gibt es keine Super-Variante der RTX 2060, hier gab es zum Refresh nur leicht veränderte Taktraten unter dem selben RTX 2060 Mobile Namen.

Features

Der TU106-Chip wird in 12nm gefertigt und bietet eine Reihe neuer Features, wie DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) und Real Time Ray Tracing. Dadurch lassen sich vor allem Beleuchtungseffekte sehr viel realistischer darstellen. Weiterhin gibt es Support für DisplayPort 1.4 (ready), HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) sowie H.265 Video De- und Encoding (PlayReady 3.0).

Performance

Die Performance der GeForce RTX 2060 Super liegt etwas über dem Niveau einer GeForce GTX 1080. Werden auch die neuen Features unterstützt, so ist die GeForce RTX 2060 der GeForce GTX 1080 deutlich überlegen. Damit ordnet sich die RTX 2060 Super im oberen Mittelfeld ein und kann die meisten Spiele der Jahre 2018 und 2019 in hohen Einstellungen und in 1.440p flüssig darstellen. Gegenüber AMD sollte es die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super mit AMD's kommender Navi-Generation aufnehmen können (z.B. AMD Radeon RX 5700).

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der GeForce RTX 2060 Super wird vom Hersteller mit 175 Watt beziffert und liegt damit etwas über dem Vorgängermodell (GeForce RTX 2060 160 Watt). Im Vergleich zur ähnlich schnellen GTX 1080, ist die Stromaufnahme deutlich geringer.

Die Taktraten der Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060S

Wie schon aus der oberen Tabelle zu erkennen ist, hebt Nvidia den Basistakt der GeForce RTX 2060S etwas an (1.470 MHz). Gleichzeitig sinkt der Boost-Takt im Vergleich zur RTX 2060 leicht auf nun 1.650 MHz. Das Power-Limit der Grafikkarte beträgt 175 Watt und lässt sich um 22 Prozent erhöhen oder um 29 Prozent verringern. Mit den Werkseinstellungen lag der Boost-Takt der GeForce RTX 2060S jedoch deutlich höher. Fast immer wurden mehr als 1.800 MHz erreicht, bevor das PT (Power-Target) eingriff, um die Taktfrequenz zu beschränken. Der 8 GB fassende VRAM taktet mit effektiven 14 GHz und ist somit gleich schnell wie bei der RTX 2060.

Synthetische Benchmarks

Die synthetischen Benchmarks verdeutlichen sehr gut, dass Nvidias Plan sehr gut aufgegangen ist. Die Super-Modelle sind genau da platziert, wo sie sein sollen. Wir weisen an dieser Stelle darauf hin, dass alle Grafikkarten, welche Sie in der Vergleichstabelle sehen mit dem gleichen Testsystem getestet wurden. Bei den MSI-Grafikkarten handelt es sich jedoch um ab Werk übertaktete Versionen der jeweiligen GPUs. Hier sollte der Abstand bei den FE-Modellen etwas geringer sein.

Mit der Radeon VII kann AMD der RTX 2080 noch gut Paroli bieten. Dies sollte sich jedoch ändern, wenn die GeForce RTX 2080S verfügbar ist.

Bei der Spieleperformance zeigt sich ein ähnliches Bild, wie zuvor bei den synthetischen Benchmarks, wenngleich die GeForce RTX 2060S dank des größeren VRAM nun in bei maximalen Details bessere Frameraten auf den Bildschirm bringt. Der Abstand zur RTX 2070 von MSI beträgt oftmals nur wenige Prozent. Die Leistung der AMD-Karten ist sehr von dem jeweiligen Spiel abhängig. Insgesamt können wir aber festhalten, dass die GeForce RTX 2060S rund 10 – 20 Prozent schneller ist als die RTX 2060 FE. Da wir hier im Vergleich nur die ab Werk übertakteten MSI-Grafikkarten haben, fällt der Vorsprung dementsprechend geringer aus. Gegenüber einer AMD Radeon RX 5700 kann sich die GeForce RTX 2060S fast immer durchsetzen. 

Die Frametimes und auch den Frameverlauf haben wir mit The Witcher 3 (Ultra-Preset) aufgezeichnet und grafisch dargestellt. Bei den Frametimes gibt es nur hin und wieder einzelne Bilder, welche eine höhere Latenz haben. Dies ist jedoch für den Anwender nicht zu merken. Auch die Bildraten zeigen eine gute Stabilität auch über einen längeren Zeitraum. Mit durchschnittlich 83 Bildern pro Sekunde ist ruckelfreies Spielen garantiert.

Die Compute Performance steigt aufgrund der höheren Anzahl an Recheneinheiten dementsprechend. Wie zu erwarten war, reiht sich die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060S hinter der RTX 2070 Gaming Z 8G von MSI ein. Der Vorsprung auf die RTX 2060 Gaming Z 6G beträgt je nach Testszenario bis zu 20 Prozent. Die Radeon VII und auch die Radeon RX 5700 können hier teilweise ihr Potenzial sehr gut zeigen und schaffen es sogar sich vor der RTX 2080 zu platzieren. Allerdings schwankt die Leistung stark, sodass in Einzeltests die beiden AMD-Karten teilweise weit abgeschlagen hinter die RTX-Familie von Nvidia zurückfällt.

Die zusätzliche Leistung hat ihren Preis. So klettert der Energiebedarf der RTX 2060S etwas nach oben, denn der zusätzliche VRAM möchte natürlich auch mit Energie versorgt werden. Unter dem Strich gibt Nvidia für die Founders Edition ein TDP von 175 Watt an. Das sind 15 Watt mehr, aber immer noch 15 Watt weniger als unser Vergleichsmodell von MSI.

Unsere Verbrauchsmessungen beziehen sich immer auf den kompletten Testrechner ohne Monitor. Hier verbrauchte das System im Leerlauf 77 Watt. Mit diesem Verbrauch haben wir gerechnet, denn alle anderen Grafikkarten lagen im Leerlauf auf gleichem Niveau. Starten wir den Stresstest, so steigt der Energiebedarf des Systems auf etwa 281 Watt an. Im direkten Vergleich zur MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z ist das System auf Basis der RTX 2060S sogar noch etwas sparsamer. Erhöhen wir zudem das PT um 22 Prozent, so klettert der gemessene Stromhunger der RTX 2060S auf 323 Watt an. Für den Verbrauch beim Spielen nutzen wir The Witcher 3 mit dem Ultra-Preset und erreichten einen Wert von knapp unter 300 Watt. Hier muss sich die RTX 2060S erstmals der RTX 2060 geschlagen geben, denn das Modell von MSI benötigte im Test ca. 10 Watt weniger.

Während des Stresstests haben wir natürlich auch einen Blick auf die Temperaturen geworfen. An dieser Stelle sei jedoch noch erwähnt, dass die Temperaturen bei geschlossenem Gehäuse ermittelt wurden. Mit 72 °C macht die RTX 2060S im Referenzdesign den Anfang beim PT von 100 Prozent. Die Lüfter drehen mit 50 Prozent (ca. 1.800 U/Min), was als leicht hörbar gewertet werden kann. Beim erhöhten PT von 122 Prozent klettert die GPU-Temperatur um 6 °C auf nun 78 °C an. Beide Lüfter drehen bei dieser Teststellung mit rund 2.100 U/Min (57 Prozent). Nun ist aber auch ein deutliches Rauschen der beiden Axiallüfter zu hören.

Insgesamt hat Nvidia mit der Kühleinheit die Temperatur der GPU sehr gut unter Kontrolle. Zu keinem Zeitpunkt musste die GPU aufgrund von thermischen Problemen gedrosselt werden. Das Power-Limit wird hier viel früher erreicht.

Unser Referenzmodell von Nvidia bildet die Basiskonfiguration der RTX 2060S. Die Modelle der vielen Bordpartner werden mit alternativen Kühllösungen und teilweise auch mit höheren Taktraten versehen, wie es auch bei der MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z 6G der Fall war. Beim Referenzmodell lässt sich das PT um 22 Prozent erhöhen, wodurch der ganzen Grafikkarte nun ca. 215 Watt zur Verfügung stehen. Dies erhöht den Spielraum um die GPU und auch das VRAM zu übertakten. In Zahlen bedeutet dies ein Plus von 145 MHz bei der GPU und ein Plus von 900 MHz beim VRAM. Der Spielraum beim Übertakten ist jedoch stark von dem jeweiligen Modell abhängig und es gibt keine Garantie, welche Leistungsreserven noch in der Grafikkarte stecken.

Mit unseren Einstellungen kann man ca. 10 Prozent zusätzlich an Leistung aus der RTX 2060S kitzeln, wenngleich die Lüfterkurve etwas steiler wird und man mit der Lautstärke zufrieden ist. Tatsächlich kratzt die GeForce RTX 2060S im übertakteten Zustand an der Leistung einer RTX 2070 FE.

Die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060S Founders Edition ist eine vorgezogene Antwort auf AMDs Navi-Generation. Zeitgleich verschwindet die normale RTX 2060 und wird vermutlich für Schnäppchenjäger interessant, denn auch wenn diese nur 6-GB-VRAM bietet, reicht die Leistung locker für 1.080p Gaming, wenn man bereit ist, nicht alle Schieberegler auf den Anschlag zu stellen. Wer nicht warten konnte und schon eine RTX 2060 sein Eigen nennt, wird wohl oder übel auf lange Sicht aufrüsten müssen, wenn es um kompromissloses Gaming in 1.080p und 1.440p geht. Hier kam selbst eine RTX 2060 an ihre Grenzen, denn einige Spiele fordern mehr als 6-GB-VRAM. Genau hier setzt die RTX 2060S an. Mit nun 8-GB-GDDR6-VRAM bietet diese nun genauso viel, wie die RTX 2070 und die RTX 2080, was die Grafikkarte insgesamt zukunftssicherer macht.

Auch leistungstechnisch hat Nvidia etwas nachgebessert, was insgesamt zu einem Leistungsplus von bis zu 20 Prozent resultiert. Dieser Zuwachs hängt natürlich immer vom jeweiligen Spiel und dem Preset ab.

Mit dem schlichten Design und der sehr guten Verarbeitung, sowohl optisch als auch haptisch, punktet die Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060S. Außerdem werden die Käufer mit einer guten Spieleleistung belohnt. 

Der erhöhte Energiebedarf geht in Ordnung, wenn man den Leistungsgewinn der neuen RTX 2060S gegenüberstellt. Bereits ab Werk übertaktete Grafikkarten der RTX 2060 Serie waren hier nicht unbedingt sparsamer.

Nichtsdestotrotz wird es die Grafikkarte schwer haben, Käufer zu finden, denn immerhin verlangt Nvidia für das Einstiegsmodell der RTX-Serie nun 419 Euro. Wer ausschließlich in 1.080p zockt und auf DLSS sowie Raytracing nicht angewiesen ist, wird auch mit einer preiswerteren GeForce GTX 1660Ti glücklich. Wer langfristig plant, einen QHD- oder WQHD-Monitor zu kaufen, sollte lieber zu einer RTX 2060S greifen oder sich im roten Lager bei AMD umschauen, denn die Navi-Karten sind ebenfalls für 1.440p-Gaming ausgelegt. Für bedingungsloses 4K-Gaming reicht die Leistung der Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060S jedoch nicht aus.
